Please translate new 2002/2003 Silver Eagle Buying Guide

For us small time collectors, what does the Mint's new policy of making dealers buy 2002 silver eagles
in order to purchase 2003 silver eagles do to the cost of the coins and the collectability of the coins?

It is very confusing and I would like to hear what effect this has on the rest of us.

  • this is the first I've heard of this policy, but I doubt it would have much impact on pricing. I've already received offers for 2003 silver eagles for $139 per roll delivered.

As far as I know, the Mint has done this every year, because, at this time of year, all the dealers are ordering 2003 Eagles so that they can be the first ones to offer the new "hot off the presses" Eagles.

As a result, in order not to be stuck with left-over inventories of 2002 items, the Mint forces the dealers to accept the 2002 coins along with their 2003 coins until the 2002 coins are sold out.

As far as I can tell, this has no impact on the market for Eagles.

  • The mint only sells bullion coins to a couple of distributors. Does anyone know who they are?

I think there are actually about 7-10 firms who purchase Eagles directly from the Mint.

I recall seeing the list in Coin World a couple of years ago. Perhaps if you ask them they can tell you.
