i'm sure it's been asked dozens of times, but what would you want to see on new coins? i'll go first:

1. Jack Benny
2. Carol Burnett
3. Tim Allen
4. The Simpsons
5. Everyone on Star Trek and STTNG
6. Michael Landon
2. Only representations of Liberty, or animals, buildings etc.
3. Not a requirement for "In god we trust","Liberty", or "E.Pluribus Unum" on the coin, only the year, country and date.
4. No whacky "Golden Dollar Experiments"
5. No mintmark for Philadelphia coins
I'd like to see denominations of:
2-cent piece
5-cent piece
10-cent piece
25 cent piece
1 dollar coin (size of current half dollar)
5 dollar coin (with silver)
10 dollar coin (size and composition of old silver dollars)
But I'm not holding my breath of course, I saw an interview with the then mint director when the state quarter program launched
and a reporter asked him about getting rid of the cent. His answer as head of our mint? "I think the citizens of Illinois would have something to say about removing lincoln from our coinage <chuckles>" Geez..
I think coinage should be attractive, with nice designs that last, and not billboards for movements, propaganda, or political correctness.

What's everyone think of the Jefferson nickel situation. Actually, what exactly was the final decision on that. Did Virginia get to keep "their" design for all time? I know there was a Bill proposed but it never went through as far as I could tell.

<< <i>Given that all the coins are low relief now, I don't know if fat albert could be rendered accurately. But if we are going with TV people (real or otherwise), then here are a few I'd like to see:
1. Jack Benny
2. Carol Burnett
3. Tim Allen
4. The Simpsons
5. Everyone on Star Trek and STTNG
6. Michael Landon >>
You forgot Tim Conway and i would add Don Knotts

<< <i>Lets see, bring back the Franklin half, then a Frankie penny, Frankie Nickel, Frankie quarter, and a new Winged Liberty dime! >>
Well, sounds good except if we're going to have a new mercury dime then it should
be updated a little. Maybe put the liberty bell and a tiny eagle on the reverse.

1) No people (live or dead) - please!!! Keep it allegorical. Various incarnations of Liberty, eagles, natural scenes, historical artifacts, etc. Once a person is on a coin you will have special intrest groups cry bloody murder when it is time to make a change (see the VA nickel debacle).
2) Make circulating coins of 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, 1 dollar and 2 dollar (bi-metallic) denominations. Round to the nickel. Eliminate the one and two dollar bills.
3) Keep cent and half dollar as non-circulating proof and uncirculated numismatic items.
4) Make all proof coins as high relief specimens. Keep low relief for circulation but show full detail as proof.

I prefer the idea of a numeric denomination for all US coins. We are one of the last developed nations with words instead of numbers denoting the value of our coins.
I have laid out the ground work for a number of different designs and will be cutting them into plaster as time goes on, but so far the only one I have put into pixels is the "new" quarter design...a nice rim-to-rim design of an eagle (as required) with incuse lettering...I think they had something with the indian gold, and never got back to it. ANyhow, as time goes on, I will be carving out a whole set for the mint's consideration...but for now...
My rendition of what I think should be on the reverse of the quarter...

I did some statehood quarter designs, but when I found out that the mint was using the initials of the engraver that finalized the design rather than the original artist of the design, I dropped out of any running for statehood quarter designs. I'm not a metallurgist, but I can carve a design out of plaster that "could" be used for a coin - I don't need someone else "cleaning" up my work and taking the credit for it...no thanks...so I bowed out of working on pieces for five different SH quarter design contests. (Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Kansas).
Anyhow, my thoughts are sincere, and I really hope the mint listens to at least someone like me, if not me. I really want to make the coins we spend collectible once again, and I don't think they need to be made of precious metal to be so. I just think they have to have innovative, inpsiring works of art on them. Thanks for the kudos.

Most impressive and perhaps the best argument yet to change the designs!
I remain convinced that there are hundreds of talented artists in this country who could give the United States a beautiful, modern, 21st century coinage. C.D.'s quarter and the work of D. Carr affirm this conviction. Why we are subjected every 10 weeks to the latest SQ monstrosity is a shame that will live with the US for millennia. Where are the 2002 equivalents of Teddy Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens? We need someone to stand up, say we're changing the coins, and they're going to be beautiful, and no committee, PAC, focus group, congresscritter, or Virginia delegation is going to get in the way.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
2. We should return to (relatively) high relief on our coins instead of the very low relief currently used.
3. We should make our high and middle denomination circulating coins out of gold and silver again, and start making the one cent coins out of mostly copper again. Of course, this would require making very high denomination coins or revaluing the dollar.
4. I like that idea of a nude Marilyn Monroe design on our coins!
