Home Buy, Sell & Trade - Cards & Memorabilia

Did you guys hear about this? Possible Ken Griffey Jr. to San Diego deal?

Looks like Phil Nevin nixed the trade:

Who knew?

Ken Griffey Jr. for Phil Neviin raises the question in my mind: has any star in sports faded as badly as Griffey's has? Remember just a few years ago when we were talking about him breaking hank Aaron's home run record, and being known as one of the greatest ever?

  • Between Griffey, Frank Thomas and Albert Belle, anyone who collected cards of baseball stars in the mid 90's is holding A LOT of worthless cardboard right now.

Belle and Thomas are great examples of this phenomenon.

  • Griffey is still very popular, but he has died down tremendously. Remember when you couldn't get a Griffey UD rookie for less then $100? I haven't checked, but you can probably get one for $20-$40. I collect autos before baseball games, and I can tell you that when Griffey was a Mariner, it was packed, like 5 rows deep, but when he became a Red, there were maybe 2 rows deep.
Interested primarily in Champ Bailey-RCs, game-used and autos
  • It's incredible...I really think baseball is the only sport where a player can be on top of the world and then just lose it. Think about it - guys like Rick Ankiel suddenly can't throw strikes anymore, guys like Griffey and Frank Thomas go from dominating to average in just a year or two. I guess it shows how much more of a mental game baseball really is...you rarely see a guy like Michael Vick suddenly start throwing into triple coverage, or a Jason Richardson suddenly just forget how to shoot.

  • Belle has hip condition and can't play.

The Big Hurt tore his bicep, and never fully recovered, he made comments about his salary and the fans turned on him, getting out of Chicago will be the best thing for him, Atlanta would be a good place for him to end up.

Griffey left for the money, and once the injuries hit, he was never the same. Just like Frank Thomas, the fans turned on him, a change of scenery would be in his best interest. If he can get a fresh start somewhere else, that should help revive his career, that is, if it isn't over already.

Nevin is a very good player, he can hit, and has above average D. The only knock on him is that he is/was a hothead, but he's seemed to overcome that in San Diego. The reason they want to move him is to give Sean Burroughs the job at third, without having to shake up the rest of the lineup.
  • i can say one thing mets picked up a damn good pitcher from the braves image

  • Griffey left for the money

Griffey actually took less money than other teams were offering to play in Cincy. I know, it's all relative, and he's still making a boatload.
