Is PCGS Loosening Up?

RonyahskiRonyahski Posts: 3,117 ✭✭✭✭✭
Has PCGS recently loosened up their grading? I've noticed several posts from submitters who are "satisfied", "surprised", "pleased", with raw and crossover submissions. You didn't witness those emotions a month or two, or three, etc. ago. Most of the coins mentioned seem to be of the "modern" type. So what's up, anything?
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

I feel my crossovers that were completed today were given pretty fair grades on the ones that crossed. On the two that didn't one I understand and one I am clueless.

I happen to like tight grading standards, so I hope the answer is no - and that the real reason is they've dispensed with the politics that were so prevalent.

I don't think they are loosening up, I think my recent crossovers (5 out of 6) were all good enough to deserve the crossover. I think this time I did a better job of picking the coins to submit for crossover, my previous attempt was 1 out of 4 and some of those coins were just wishful thinking.
    They sure didn't loosen up on the 15 MS64 Ikes (1 1971P and 14 1972P) I cracked out and submitted, I got 4 MS63 and 11 MS64 grades.
These coins were all submitted on Nov 11.

I just received results notice by email on two gold pieces submitted for crossover to PCGS. One $2.5G NGC-MS64 which I wanted in a PCGS holder, and truly is 64. Second a $10G in NGC-AU58 holder which I really doubt is a true 58 but hoped it can crossover...maybe...somehow, maybe 'm being too critical image Well exactly what I thought ...... 64 crossover on the 2.5G, and an NCG notice on the 58. Too bad but it is what it is!
Loosening up? Nope! and I hope it stays this way!

I don't think they're any looser - they just need to get over their bias against NGC coins......

I offer here my latest grades. Check invoice #9001379. The 4 Ikes would have all had a solid shot at 66. Am now at the point of sending in the best of my best but something has happened at PCGS with regards to business strike Ike dollars. A 66 of past years are now 64s! Hey guys, they are not going to have the luster of a silver dollar; copper/nickel doesn't do that. I guess there is nothing one can do but be frustrated. image

misterR, first the most important question. Which service level did you use? I need to judge where my submissions are in the grading process. image

As for MS Ikes and a 66 of past years are now 64. This isn't too far off. I can compare some MS63s that I got to MS65 from 1-2 years ago and the 63s look better. It practically takes an act of god to get an MS65 clad now.

Greg my economy was checked in at pcgs on 11/6 and the grades posted 12/5.
I still have one economy that arrived 11/6 not done yet.

My economy PCGS regrade checked in 11-22 and arrived today 12-5-02. The economy NGC crossovers are still AWOL....perhaps they're now taking the time to look at them???image

    Edited to add "economy".

  • I would have to say NO!!

Recently submitted an 1889 CC Morgan that I thought might be cleaned but my dealer guaranteed original - result: cleaned
Sent an 1884 CC that is head and shoulders above one I already have slabbed at ms64 - result: MS64 (I agree, I was hoping though)

Had a chance to compare 1938 D buffalo nickels at the coin dealers the other day. My PCGS MS66 looked better than ICG and SEGS and NGC of the same slabbed grades in my opinion and the opinion of two customers and the ANACS dealer. Is mine undergraded or are the others overgraded? IMHO my PCGS is graded correctly and the others were too optimistic in theirs.

Thanks. Since I had some modern submission arrive on the same day, I guess I'll get my grade tomorrow. imageimageimage

    No, not at all.

PR70DCAMs are very RARE and you should pay high premiums to own them (at least for the one I'm selling)
