"Unsearched" hoards

Hi, could anyone shed light on some of the wheat penny listings I have seeing on ebay and coin magazines regarding "unsearched" hoards? What is the liklihood the coins are indeed unsearched. I mean, what would it take to eyeball them and put the interesting ones aside for closer inspection? Just wondering if anyone had any feelings one way or the other. thanks in advance and great message board. Gino

I would say the odds are the same that every member on this board will send me a Morgan dollar from their collection. While theoretically not an impossibility, in all likelihood it is not going to happen. image

    Ahh, great picture!
  • I just recently sold about 500 rolls of wheats, both on and off of EBAY. I can tell you honestly, that I never cracked open one roll of the danged things. I stated in my auction that I had neither the desire nor the time, since i don"t collect pennies. So not every claim of unsearched is false.

  • Bulldog,

Good point. However, where did you get the rolls? I would bet you anything you want that somewhere in the chain of trading/selling that someone did collect pennies and did search them.

I mean, if they weren't searched how did whoever sold them to you know they were even wheat pennies?

the only unsearched are original bank rolls. And those are easy to open and play with and re-seal in most cases.

yikes, i guess you'd have to define "unsearched"!

there is a legendary hoard in central illinois. as it's related to me, an old farmer dude has been throwing change in a chest, like, since 1940. as it is related to me, the old man has pledged to sell the hoard to a certain dealer when he passes. so yes, i think hoards do exist. for the dealer, this is 1st hand access to an unsearched hoard.

but i seriously doubt you will ever get an oppportunity at a truly unsearched hoard 2nd hand, if you know what i mean. ie if there's someone between you & the hoard, i seriously doubt it is unsearched.

Here's an auction where the seller is being pretty straightforward about his unsearched wheaties...

i especially like the remarks he makes about checking the feedback before you order that one pound lot that might, just might have a '14-D or SVDB in it for you to find...

one question to ask yourself is,"have the lucky finders made repeat orders?"...i know if i found either of the two keys,'14-D or SVDB, even in the lowly grade of good or about good in just one pound of wheaties (the incredible claim was made by one buyer of just a pound of wheaties in another auction that he found both) the seller is going to get more orders from me...no question about it...come to think of it i have yet to see feedback describing the condition of these keys that were found...and where are those repeat orders?

    4. I have NOT searched these coins, but I have taken two random handfuls. These samples revealed coins from the teens, 20s, and 30s.

Oh yeah, he didn't actually have a #4 on his list of caveats. That was in his actual listing for his "unsearched" coins.

probably just some reassurance for the bidders,Russ...i just give this guy some credit for being more straightforward with his caveats than most i've seen with their outrageous and unbelievable claims of what is to be found...

Actually it is theoretically impossible...I don't own a Morgan to give you (hence the name - ALL copper). image

Actually if I purchased a bulk lot like that and found one of the keys I probably would NOT go back and buy more. As we know the chances of one key date being in a group like that is very unlikely. The chances of MULTIPLE keys being in the hoard is MUCH smaller. So if you do find one you've probavly either gotten the lot that was seeded, or you have lucked out to the one key that was actually in the group. The chances of finding a second one make your chances of finding the first look good.
