What should I do with all these quarters

I can't help it, I keep stashing away all the state quarters I get. Whenever I get change, I look for interesting quarters (I'm sure the clerk thinks I'm checking to make sure I got the right change).

Who wants to trade?

    Mikey,
You'll enjoy this. Since I was a kid, I always put my change in a gallon glass jar. Sometimes I would cash out half way through and sometimes I would have the patience to fill it.

I never spend coins. Even on business trips, I will sometimes come back with $5 in change for the jar. Since 1999, I have filled it 3 times, but always put back the quarters and cashed in the other coins. It is now about 1/3 full with quarters.

I have decided to run an experiment. When it is completely full of quarters, I will create a tally of the number of different state quarters. I know I am a complete geek, but I thought it would be interesting to see which ones show up most often. In theory, I shoudl have significantly more early quarters since they will have had more time to circulate. But who knows?

By the way, sometimes I get UNC quarters as change from a new roll. I've been keeping these and have over 10 in solid MS64+ and a couple MS66.

  • That's funny. I've often wondered if the clerk thinks I'm counting my change when I look to see if there's anything interesting there.

I've been stashing all the state quarters I get that aren't obviously messed up. When I go to the laundramat I find myself putting an extra $10 or $20 in the change machine... just to see what I get. It's an obsession! I think I need help. image

All the state quarters from my change get put in my ceramic monkey.

Sometimes I do pretty good at the change machine at the car wash

I give all my pocket change to a homeless man on 57th and 8th ave. He blesses me and goes and gets a bottle of champipple for the long cold evening ahead.

  • I am like Blade, I rarely ever spend change. Parking meters and newspaper machines do get some and I try to circulate the state quarters.

I built up three big hoards in my life before cashing them in. The last time I put the dough, over a grand, into a savings account. Then I started adding to that more frequently. Then I started getting interest so lost track of the real total. Then I just spent it and now just add the money to my checking account. I think I will open up a savings account again!

  • I would spend the quarters. Take out your loop and look at the condition. I will check the real OBW roll coins that you sometimes get when your the first person to get a fresh coinbut unless they are high Mint State I spend them. I use to save SBA's that were circulated but now they just go back into circulation.

I always keep outstanding, or otherwise interesting, examples from change. but then I'll spend the rest. Back in 1988 I got 4 mint rolls of nickels from the bank. Face value, of course. Well, picked through them this year and got 2 FS out of them. The rest were either corroded or just regular MS65 and lower. A few had some interesting toning and I kept them. But I've since spent the rest. They ain't worth it to keep.
  • I guess I'm just the opposite. I figured more coin collectors would like spending coins. In fact, I trade paper money for coins at the bank so I'll have coins to spend. I buy my cup of coffee in the morning with coins. I'll buy a gallon of milk at the local grocer with coins. I use them all. Dollars, halves, state quarters. I'll even seed some older stuff in with the coins I'm spending. For example, I bought ten rolls of steelies a few months back and have been spending them a few here and there. Nobody else does this?
