ADD A PROOFLIKE DESIGNATION FOR MS COINS!!

I have some super cool deep mirror prooflike "s" mint silver Wash quarters and "d" mint silver Roosie dimes and other great PL Mint State coins (like a couple Franklin Half Dollars). Why does PCGS not recognize these coins as PL and DMPL? Why should Morgans get PL and DMPL but not an exceedingly rare Barber quarter, or Wash quarter, etc? I even have some awesome Mercury Dimes that are DMPL.

Make a new policy that ANY Mint State coin that is truly Prooflike earns the PL designation. There is no reason to limit it to Morgans. Do you know how cool an MS "s" mint Lincoln Cent is in Prooflike? An MS Jefferson Nickel in DMPL is a killer coin.

I don't believe I have ever seen one!!!!!

The only one I could imagine is one which is doctored

The problem with recognizing PL coins is dipping certain silver coins will create a PL appearance.

Now this is a subject I can comment on..... since you bring up Washington quarters. How practical is it to change the potential designation/attribute on coins already slabbed.

Although I do have some quarters that would designate PL or DMPL, what if my re-submissions miss the mark? The value of the coin I paid a premium for might just go down and I stand to lose a considerable amount of money.

A knowledgable collector has already paid a premium for a killer coin.. do we need the holders to tell us this? I dont think so. Buy the coin, not the holder!!

Sorry Mitch, although I believe your idea would be in line with trying to make the coin market more appealing, I dont believe this to be a good idea. If I wanted to collect proofs instead of MS coins, I will.. but I dont want these designations to change the market to the point where I have to reconsider the set(s) I have put together. They are top grade in their own right and the slab doesnt need to tell anyone that IMHO.
HAVE A GREAT DAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!

Do you think we can get PCGS to recognise more Varieties ?

Do you think we can get PCGS to grade the coins CORRECTLY the FIRST TIME ?

WWQ: I have no idea what you are talking about. You are mixing up the issue of grades with designations. If your coin is graded MS65 and is PL, then you will get to add a PL designation without affecting the grade on the holder. Hence, you have no problem.

Stewart: A knowledgeable dealer while working for a national coin company over a period of decades collected a small group of neat Prooflike coins, including a couple PL Mint State "s" mint Lincolns and some nice PL Mercuries. I bought the small group last year. I'll tell you more about it next time we see each other, perhaps in FLA.

ANACS will give the PL designation to any coin that warrants it.

I should add, that PCGS giving the PL/DMPL designation to all coins is a good idea. NGC already gives it to some.

Most clad coins also appear in PL. Most are scarce. Mint set cents from
after 1985 are actually common in proof like. Some approach 5% of mintage.

I'm all for adding the PL/DMPL designation to any coin that merits it. I'd even go a step further and use it for coins that are PL/DMPL (or, in the case of proofs, CAM/DCAM) on just one side. They're certainly more appealing than coins that lack those qualities. I've seen more branch mint Mercs that are PL than any pre-1980 denomination other than Morgans.

The only "S" mint cents I've seen that I would consider to be PL are a few 1974-S coins. The 1936-1942 "S" cents are frequently very glossy, but not what I'd call prooflike. I've found many PL late-date Lincolns - and a few Jeffersons and Roosevelts - in pocket change, some with mirrors that rival those of proofs.

PCGS probably loses some business to other services that offer PL/DMPL designations. It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult or cost significantly more for PCGS to follow their lead.
