Which IHC closeup pic do you like better??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,381 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bought a new camera attachment that allows pictures to be taken through the microscope. Below are 2 examples, the first with the Coolpix 995 macro setting, the image then magnified, halogen light. The second is the same camera with the attachment taken through a speciman microscope (so cheap there isn't even a brand name on it) at 10X, "True/Ott light". The coin is a 1866 S1 DDO IHC, NGC 65RB.

Do you agree it's an improvement?

The second one is definitely better, and that's a nice doubled die!

Considering I spent only 10 minutes setting it up, shooting the photo and posting it, I'm excited about the possibilities once some serious experimenting sets in!imageimage

Your 2nd shot is so much more alive with Liberty jumping right out at the eye the 2nd shot is the better. Now tell me all about that equipment. I must have that equipment, tell me about that equipment .

  • Try posting the first image after taking the picture in macro-mode, but before magnifying. Digital zoom = poop.
  • The second is definately better.

It's a binocular microscope I bought at a coin show for about $300 - low end for scopes. It has 10/30X lenses and 2 sets of eyepieces. The adaptor is sold be the same vendor and screws to the camera lense, mine a coolpix 995. The other end fits over the eyepiece of the scope. The Ott-Lights are sold by Amos Press and were recommended by Shylock. The light allows the IHC's to be reproduced more faithfully (color). The instruction manual for the camera is a tough read but covers the basics. The remainder is experimentation and communication with others. If you want to see some pretty pics, pull up some of Shylocks posts.

The key with the scope is, all the pixels are dedicated to a small area rather than to the entire coin. This improves resolution and the signal/noise ratio, resulting in the sharper, clearer picture. When you magnify a pic of the entire coin, the opposite occurs.

Wow, what a difference! I've already stolen the image for my website. Look forward to seeing this new toy's work on your other varieties Lakesammman.

What strikes me as much as the doubling detail is how clearly you see the pattern of brown toning. The 995 does a good job with closeups on RD coins but the color extremes of RBs seems to confuse the camera and creates a lot of "noise".

The detail contrast of the second image is far superior to the darker 1st one.

  • I can't immediately jump to favor the second pic. I really would have preferred to see the same coin side by side under both methods. Any chance you could reshoot them again? I am currently trying to figure out what equipment I would need to shoot my double die and varieties collection, so this was a very helpful post. Of course I'm only a 20 minute drive from you and you did say you needed some interesting material, didn't you?image

I'll get it back from the bank in the near future and reshoot for you. Drop me a PM...perhaps we could get together.

Here is a better comparison - thanks for the challenge. I think it's a fairer (and closer) comparison with the same lights, camera setting, etc. Let me know what you think....

  • Well now I can say the second (lighter) pic is better.. Thanks for reshooting.

In your reshoot the first pic shows more boldness on the Liberty but it is dark the 2nd pic has better light spread and gives detail better i think. On the laptop it all looks the same but on the 21 inch lcd it looks good (the 2nd pic)

The lighting is different. With the slab, it's easier to position the lights. With the microscope eyepiece and objective in the way (plus the loss of light in transit through the scope), it's tougher to get good lighting. Will play with some different set ups and let you know if things improve.
