Neat proof Merc

I just had a blast looking through my coins at the bank. Too bad I have to keep them in the safe deposit box. Anyway I grabbed a few to bring home to try to get some images. This coin looks like it has as much frost as the 2 Mercury dimes I looked at from the Heritage auction in Santa Clara. They were labeled cameo and this one wasn't.

Carl,
Nice proof Merc. Is it for sale? What grade is it?
Jon
This coin was fresh from a proof set and recently sent in by the dealer I bought it from. That was just before Rick M. left and everybody was complaining how tough the grading was. It is currently graded 65.
The hairlike thing by Liberty's chin appears to be a die scratch, at least it looks raised to me. There are some tiny hairlines (or slide marks) on her cheek. I think this is a very nice PR 65 Cameo or maybe a just made it 66 Cam. Those 66 Cams I looked at went for about 4 times what I paid for this one. I was actually considering sending this one in again. I was thinking I might crack it out, I've never done that before...
This one is not for sale. It is in my personal proof type set. It replaces a top notch PR 67 with nice mirrors, but that one has no frost. The '42 in 67 is for sale, please check my website if interested in that one...

Ken, I was spoiled by Jeffersons and wanted a frosty portrait, but more than that I wanted real mirrors for fields. It is so hard to find proof Mercs with mirror like fields. They all seem to have flowlines. This is the coin I've been actively looking for for a long time. Some other coins seem to have fallen into my lap but this one I really had to look hard for!
Nice '40 proof. Does the reverse have the same degree of contrast? I also have that date with some contrast, but the fields more closely resemble a prooflike coin rather than a proof.
I have to agree that it's difficult to find proof Merc's without flow lines. I've got all of the dates from '37-'42 with minimal or no flowlines, except the '41!! I just can't seem to find this common date in brilliant, no-flowline condition. The best mirrors I have are on my '37. The pic below was taken when I first got my digital camera, and isn't very sharp, but it gives an idea of what the coin looks like. I'd love to have a complete run of proofs that displayed mirrors like this.
