photo copy stand

Has anyone every made a photo copy stand to hold your camera? If so, how did it turn out? I have been thinking about getting one, but most of them seem so expensive for just a pole that you attach your camera to. Are there any other ways you can think of, or have used, to hold your cameras still?
Also, someone mentioned that they wished they have a remote control button for the camera, as pushing the button to actually take the picture can move the camera slightly. But won't a timer work as well? You could set the timer up for 20 seconds, and there should be no wobble left with the camera and stand.
