I just sold a 1999 Silver Proof set BOX for $31.95

I thought I would try running an auction for just the box, empty holders, and COA to see if I could get issue price just for the BOX!
Only took 12 hours and I got it, $31.95 for the empty!
E Bay #804607744.

    KenzoT,

That's a great way to set yourself up for a neg.

    Russ, NCNE
  • That auction is WAY above board, plainly states NO COINS.
How do you figure the buyer did not know?
  • Russ I agree a Neg could be made about this BUT hey he did stat in both the Title and write up that there are no coins. It would take a fool to try an Neg him for this one. Nouthing wrong in my book here. Wow it is amazing what sells on Ebay.

The buyer will probably put circs in it and sell them as proofs.

If someone bought that, and didnt manage to see the NO COINS written all over the auction, that is their own stupidity.

I'm with Placid. This box might be resold with pocket change. A little voice is telling me so.

    KenzoT,

There's absolutely nothing wrong with your auction. The description is clear, and makes it obvious. But, that won't stop some idiot who didn't read or comprehend from negging you when they receive the merchandize. It is an all too frequent occurence on eBay.

EDIT: Although, this buyer looks like an experienced eBayer, so he probably knew what he was doing.

  • The guy has an E Bay rating of 454......He's an experienced E Bayer and if he did think I was selling a WHOLE 1999 silver proof set for $31.95, he must think I am as big a fool as you think he is.
  • And your proud Duh?????? image
  • Just amazing. I guess there is an azz for every seat. Can't say the auction didn't say "NO COINS? about a half dozen times..

I just threw a ton of empty boxes in the trash can, including Eagles velvet boxes, etc. Yes, I knew somewhere they might be paying $2 or so each. No, I do not plan on digging them out!! image Wondercoin

    Michael,
Wouldn't be the first 1995w box that someone put in a 1995p proof and resold.

When PlayStation2 was brand new, someone sold just the box for around $300- boy was the buyer pissed... you should have seen the NEG!

But... the description did say it was JUST the box... so someone paid for their system by selling the packaging!

    I've paid $50 for 1995-W boxes.

Wondercoin-those velvet boxes are worth real money. You can probably get $20 each for the 1986 1 oz boxes with the certs. I'm always buying coins in capsules that I need boxes for.

Hmmmm!!!!!! I have all my SAEs in Airtites holders and the Airtite Albums for them. If I sell all the boxes and certs I could end up with enough money to buy the 1995W SAE. image

One other thing, if you look at this guys auction history he buys and sells proof sets all the time. Some without boxes. So I am sure he knows what he is doing.

It irks me to read about original mint packaging from the 19th century or for early commemoratives being thrown away by auction houses, but the modern stuff is released in large enough quantities that the packaging won't be scarce for a long time.

the problem is people don't want it without the box. i couldn't care less about the cardboard box and COA but if i don't have it, people generally don't want it.

what the heck kind of sense does a COA make with a coin anyway? i could create a counterfeit SAE and then just put the COA with it - or just find the same paper and print out my own COAs. I don't know why they just don't get rid of them, it's just another pain in the butt and it doesn't certify anything.

greg - i'm not crazy but i'll take em if you're throwing them out. you can generally get a pretty big discount for SAEs without the packaging.

I bought the quarter panel from a fella it came with the box and and COA. Maybe I should run the box and COA and see what I will get for it.

  • Got to be a flim-flam in the future somewhere. Maybe someone will try to put in ms or circ coins. But wouldn`t someone have sense enough to look at the mint marks? Maybe he has some raw proofs. But if he does where is the box for them. Mmmmm very interesting. Maybe we have another slab collector. He is going to specialize in US. Mint Proof Sets.

In the past I've sent the 99 silvers in to be certified and had leftover coins that I put in 2X2's. After beaking up a few sets let's say I had all the coins to make a complete set but didn't have the box. Then it would make sense for me to buy a box for $31.95 and put the coins back together to make a set. Then I could sell it for the $110. The pieces are worth less than the set is together. Just a theory.
  • That's nuthin'.... I bought a whole box of proof sets once, and not ONE of them had a half dollar! They'd all been savagely removed!

(I'll give you ONE guess who I bought them from) image

The clad 99 proofs sell for next to nothing compared with the silver. Someone could put in clad quarters and an unsuspecting buyer could accidentally buy what they thought were the more expensive silver coins.

    Hmmmm, makes you wonder sometimes.

That's a VERY good point, especially because unless you look at the rims of the coins, they all appear identical- silver and clad, that is.

  • seems farrily clear to me - NO COINS in text and no coins n the pics - if the buyer messed up then there is no one to blaim but themselves
  • TheNumishTheNumish Posts: 1,628 ✭✭
You mean someone would actually put clad coins in a holder for silver coins? I'm shocked. I'm just shocked I tell you!!!!! Any person who would do that would be a cad and a boor. They should get no jelly on their toast for 30 days as punishment!!

Maybe the guy just needed a box and didn't want to spend a lot of time looking for one.

Give them away? These valuable things? image I don't have any SAE boxes (a year or so ago I tossed 50 of them). However, I'll see what I have and if you want it, all you got to do is pay postage. image

And a very good theory, at the shop I was in when I lived in Louisville we did exactly that with sets of commemoratives. When someone came in who wanted a set in the original box with all the paperwork we simply picked up individual coins at lower prices, pulled the needed boxes and paperwork out of our hoarded supply and created "original" sets which sold at a premium. The COA's were really easy back then too. The authenticated the coins in the set but never specificly said which coins or in what set. You could use the COA from any set. They eventually changed that though.

Some modern sets are extremely dificult to sell without the original box.
It wouldn't surprise me if the difference in price might sometimes exceed
    the price of the box.

  • Here is the final word on this subject.
Last night I E Mailed the buyer to be certain he knew what he bought.
He knows he bought the box, etc. ONLY, and he is pleased with his purchase.
