I just sold a 1999 Silver Proof set BOX for $31.95

I thought I would try running an auction for just the box, empty holders, and COA to see if I could get issue price just for the BOX!
Only took 12 hours and I got it, $31.95 for the empty!

That's a great way to set yourself up for a neg.

How do you figure the buyer did not know?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with your auction. The description is clear, and makes it obvious. But, that won't stop some idiot who didn't read or comprehend from negging you when they receive the merchandize. It is an all too frequent occurence on eBay.
EDIT: Although, this buyer looks like an experienced eBayer, so he probably knew what he was doing.

I wonder what I could get for my empty box, case and COA of the 1995W Anniversary Proof Eagle Set?
Wouldn't be the first 1995w box that someone put in a 1995p proof and resold.

But... the description did say it was JUST the box... so someone paid for their system by selling the packaging!
Wondercoin-those velvet boxes are worth real money. You can probably get $20 each for the 1986 1 oz boxes with the certs. I'm always buying coins in capsules that I need boxes for.

what the heck kind of sense does a COA make with a coin anyway? i could create a counterfeit SAE and then just put the COA with it - or just find the same paper and print out my own COAs. I don't know why they just don't get rid of them, it's just another pain in the butt and it doesn't certify anything.
greg - i'm not crazy but i'll take em if you're throwing them out. you can generally get a pretty big discount for SAEs without the packaging.

(I'll give you ONE guess who I bought them from)

No. You just used up your one guess.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
Hmmmm, makes you wonder sometimes.
<< <i>The clad 99 proofs sell for next to nothing compared with the silver. Someone could put in clad quarters and an unsuspecting buyer could accidentally buy what they thought were the more expensive silver coins. Hmmmm, makes you wonder sometimes. >>
That's a VERY good point, especially because unless you look at the rims of the coins, they all appear identical- silver and clad, that is.

Maybe the guy just needed a box and didn't want to spend a lot of time looking for one.
Give them away? These valuable things?
<< <i>After beaking up a few sets let's say I had all the coins to make a complete set but didn't have the box. Then it would make sense for me to buy a box for $31.95 and put the coins back together to make a set. Then I could sell it for the $110. The pieces are worth less than the set is together. Just a theory. >>
And a very good theory, at the shop I was in when I lived in Louisville we did exactly that with sets of commemoratives. When someone came in who wanted a set in the original box with all the paperwork we simply picked up individual coins at lower prices, pulled the needed boxes and paperwork out of our hoarded supply and created "original" sets which sold at a premium. The COA's were really easy back then too. The authenticated the coins in the set but never specificly said which coins or in what set. You could use the COA from any set. They eventually changed that though.
It wouldn't surprise me if the difference in price might sometimes exceed
the price of the box.
Last night I E Mailed the buyer to be certain he knew what he bought.
He knows he bought the box, etc. ONLY, and he is pleased with his purchase.
