Super Rare Variety, or am I just seeing things?

I came across this Large Cent , http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11947&item=804213592&rd=1 and it appears it has a doubled fraction bar and the "S" (second one) in 'STATES' is doubled.
It's been awhile, but as I recall this is a pretty tough and desireable variety.
The Seller missed it, or at minimum chose not to mention it in the auction listing narrative.

  • no, you're just used to looking at worn down, flat peices of metal. Your mind is playing tricks on you. image

  • That "S" sure looks doubled to me.

  • I think you're right about the variety, I don't know about the rarity or value though. Nice find! I hope you can hold on to it.

Darn, wish I had seen that first. Nice find. Both look doubled to me.
  • Braddick - by the time I got done reading lanlords reply I seem to have forgotten what you said........

Oh yeah, great catch! Now all we need to do is figure out who is going to tell the seller he needs to up the price because of itimage

It Does indeed. See if this seller can supply you with a few close up shoots of the S. As far as the fraction bar being doubled it's hard to say from that photo but the S comes through loud and clear. I doubt it is a reflective shadow we are seeing.
If it is so then very nice find.

going by memory, isn't this s-243? if so, it is not a rare variety, maybe r2 or so. is it a redbook variety or something??? the coin is pretty danged common, i'd say xf+ detail, net vf-20 at best, maybe eac-15. i'd say it's a later die state, on earlier die-states, the covered-up "S" is very strong. i'd say it has a decent "cool" factor, but is not rare at all.

  • Looks doubled to me. Braddick why are you so interested in such a high grade coin image Very nice coin. I like it alot.
  • It is a well known variety and it is not particularly scarce. I don't remember the variety number for sure but it is either S-243 or 244. It does show both the dropped S and the doubled fraction bar very nicely. It's a shame about the corrosion on the reverse. Still it is a coi I would not mind owning.

Hi Pat, Rarity 2 Sheldon 243 1803 stemless reverse. no stems protuding from the wreath above the ribbon on reverse as usual.

    Nice coin.

This rev die was also used on 1802 dated large cents.

    A bit rough but ok.

    Thanks

    Tbig
