I think the ones that are the best investment are the original 1950s era ones and earlier. Some from the 60s can hold their value, but not much more. Be watchful of the 50s ones, though. Many had their cherry coins taken out and replaced with the same date/mark ones that were inferior.
  • Oops Sorry was meaning the 2002 silver proof , reg proof, and unc sets.

    my bad.

I'm not sure any of the modern ones can be considered investment worthy. but if I had a choice, I would get 1 of each type. That way you're covered. image That's what I've done since 1999.
  • saw today a 1999 silver proof mint set going for $125 WOW! and a day to go.

I feel the uncirculated will be a good choice as well.

I will be stocking up on those for sure and possibly a Silver proof set.

And the best place to buy these sets are from the US mint? or anywhere else for the best price?

As long as the US Mint issues proof and mint sets on demand, without capping the production runs, I believe the "investment" potential of the issues will be fairly non-existent. The same thing has happened with Postal issues, and today you can buy unused US stamps at a discount to face value. image

  • OK guess I will seperate the coins and use them for my personal collection. Hoard them away like I do with everything.

None of the modern mint sets of any date is a very good value in the long or the
short run. The problem is that nearly 35% of the sets issued in any given year
will contain only inferior coins. Most of these low grade uncs exist in numbers in
excess of a million. There are hundreds of thousands of people putting together
date and mintmark sets of the various denominations where two years ago there
were only dozens of people. It would require nearly 1% of the states quarter col-
lectors to expand their circulation hunts back to the obsolete eagle reverse and ot-
her older coins for any real appreciation to take place. We usually find many ways
to steer new collectors to the older coins and other pursuits so what chance is
there that an astronomical number like 1% of them will gravitate to collecting the
other coins that they are searching through to find their states issues.

If you must look at mint sets then what you should be buying are the 65% of those
with some better coins in them! MS-65's which are quite scarce appear in many sets.
you will also find some very interesting varieties, all of which are unavailable in unc
from circulation. With a little more luck you'll find MS-66's in about 10% of the sets
and if you don't give up there are also registry quality coins. Choice and gem uncs
are already pretty much a shoe-in to appreciate smartly. The value of many of these
moderns is not fully reflected in the price guides largely because the coins are still a-
vailable in the rapidly disappearing mint sets.

Oh! And the 2002 mint set may not look like much now but keep in mind that even
now there are not large numbers of nickels and dimes being saved out from circulation,
and finding any modern coin made for circulation in high grade is a statistical nightmare.
Also it looks like the '02 will be a low mintage issue and quality is substantially better
    than the last few years.

Sound like just another way to store pocket change?
