Newbie question #37 - Barber crossover

I just purchased a 1906-D Barber quarter (ANACS AU53) that I would like to crossover to PCGS. Does this make sense to attempt? What are the pros/cons? I saw the other thread regarding PCGS / NGC crossovers. Thanks.

If you have a photo, try to post on here. There are some Barber collectors on this forum that can give you some feedback on thier opinion, including my-self.

ANACS has a tendency to grade barber coins about a half to full grade point higher in xf/au barbers. Which means it could be a xf-45 to Au-50. Not saying your coin is, each coin would have to be judged on its own merits. Also, there not as tough on lite surface cleaning as PCGS.

That does not mean that all coins in ANACS are graded a little high, but just a comment and feedback from experience.

  • If you are planning to keep the coin in your collection, I would not attempt to cross over to a PCGS slab unless you must have a PCGS slab for your collection.

If you hope to resell the quarter, you probably will not realize enough of a price diffence between ANACS and PCGS to justify the reslabbing cost, not to mention the risk that it may not cross to an AU53.

From the looks of the scan, it does not appear that there is much of a chance that you will exceed AU53 on the crossover.

Thanks Buffalos. I think I will forget about crossing. I was going to try to keep my slabbed coins consistent, but seems pretty pointless.
