Question Regarding Platinum Coins

I have heard some chatter that these coins may no longer be produced. I have also heard in the wake of this that the prices are really shooting up.

Can anyone shed any light on this. I have collected the $10 coins 97-02. Do these have value beyond the platinum itself?

  • I think they will continue to produce them. The changing designs on the the proof version was only set up to last for five years and THAT has now ended. So the Proofs for next year may be the same as the business strikes but I believe they will still be available for collectors to buy.
  • In the current issue of COINage (January 2003), David Ganz comments that the U.S. mint is trying to get out of the platinum bullion business because, in his words: "the mintage figures are down, the cost to lease metal is high and the profits thin."
