How Do You Spell Registry Set Owner ?

Went back to the Coin Show in Salem again today just for kicks. Especially wanted to see a Dealer one more time to see if I missed anything yesterday. Well, he pulled out a bunch of NGC Dimes that he said he bought in New York with me in mind. My first reaction was to say, I wish those were PCGS graded dimes. He asked why. I responded that I was in the PCGS and NGC registry programs. Straight faced he asked me if I knew how to spell a Registry Set owners name. Puzzled by his question I responded No. The Dealer stood up, looked down upon me and spelled out LOOSER !!! Then began to laugh. All was in good jest but it was obvious he really did not care for all things that do pertain to the Registries.

Later on after going around the floor again I came back and was talking to a Dealer that was next to the previous dealer. A third dealer began talking with us and mentioned he was also in the PCGS Registry program with 2 Buffalo Nickle Sets. Dealer number one came over and Spelled out LOOSER Twice and all had a very good chuckle. All in all a very nice Sunday morning discussing coins from different points of view.

Oh Yea. Dealer number one sold this LOOSER the following along with a couple of other Mercs.

and the Beautiful Reverse !!! Color everywhere. One Cool and Non-Looser Coin.

Interesting how Registry Set owners are Coin Collectors which translates to active coin BUYERS. These Dealers SELL coins.

Why mock those who feed their families?
    Interesting.

  • I agree 100%. Seems strange to bite the hand that feeds you. One may not like the Registry Program but why go out of your way to express your distaste and alienate a customer??

His spelling of loser may bother some people but both of us were smiling and laughing during the whole process. We talked for awhile about the Registries and he did have some very good points against them with which I agreed with. His main concern was people chasing numbers and spending big money for coins which in reality will cost those people dearly in the final outcome. Rarely do you find a dealer who is concerned about what a collector spends for a coin. Really the discussion was refreshing and I do not believe any intent was put forward by the dealer to alienate myself or anyone else.

Fairlaneman - maybe he wasn't refering to you......... maybe he was refering to grading standard changes since the inception of the registry image

Your comments bring up an interesting point. WHY is this Dealer, or any Dealer for that matter, concerned if a Collector is "chasing after the numbers". So what? "Concerned". I love it!
How does what what someone does affect this Dealer in any way, fashion or form?
If he's so concerned about me (not that I'm chasing numbers mind you- you've SEEN my sets!), why doesn't he come over and cut my grass?

I must be getting old. I don't care if it was in jest or not. I would not have purchased a single coin from him. I don't care what he had. It is one thing to make a private comment, but to make it loud enough for others to hear is wrong. I would have taken that as an insult. My guess he said that to anyone whom mentioned their registry set. I have been insulted way too much in my life to give someone like that the satifaction of purchasing a coin from him. The loser would have been him. Or is that looser?image

Pat you know I can't figure out why a Dealer or anyone else would be concerned about why a person buys what he buys and for what reason. You have your reasons for getting what you want and I have mine. Basically I don't think either of us broadcast these reasons other than we like what we are buying. So IMO other peoples concerns pertaining to our coin purchases plain don't count. I will admit I sometimes don't like to see certain people pay what they do for coins, but I do keep my mouth shut.

Don't read to much into this as actually we both were having a little fun with the subject.

Yea I wish he would come over and rake the leaves and then mow the grass. That would be cool. image

Ahh.... You caught my terrible spelling that was not edited. image

The Dealer really is a nice guy and it was Sunday morning with only 4 or 5 of us within hearing range. I really do not think he would have said anything yesterday when the place was packed and everyone within hearing range not really known.

Plus he has some great coins every year. image

I guess maybe I overreacted. In my mind I saw the place as packed. Maybe I had to be there to understand. I do have a sense of humor, too. image

    Ken,

I was just curious about who this dealer was. It sounds like something Jack Beymer would say. Sometimes people take Jack the wrong way, but I personally have the deepest respect for him and he KNOWS how to grade coins. You always know where you stand with Jack. He tells it like it is.

As far as a dealer hurting my feelings. If he has a nice coin I want, I will buy from anyone. Even if it is a dealer I hate. I won't punish myself for something they did or said.

Boy I wish Jack would come to a small show in Oregon, but that will not happen for sure. He is a guy that use to travel the National Circuit but now only does 2 or 3 local shows a year. I believe that is correct from what I have been told. I also like his direct no BS opinions which are given out with a smile at all times.

    Ken,

Jack still does all the big shows plus a smaller one in STL. I see him several shows a year. His table is one I always try to get to early, to buy and sell. He will give you a price and that's it, no haggleing(sp). I like that, it saves time. When a dealer comes down from 900 to 640 or whatever, whats up with that.

Dimeman...It is my opinion that Jack Beymer is one of the truly fine coin dealers of the last two or three decades. I think he really treats his customers fairly. And he always has a big inventory of cool key date coins. He is opinionated beyond belief, but I always respect his opinion, even when he's clearly out to lunch. If the coin market was full of Jack Beymers there would be little need for PCGS...

I sure wish he would come up with a Web Site for Us folks who cannot make the Big Shows and live out in the sticks. Have been on his mailing list off and on for years but his Merc offerings only show up about twice a year. Someone give him a hint about a Web Site, Please.

    Ken,

That would be nice, but I don't see Jack doing the web site thing. He has tooooo many coins. It would be a huge undertaking getting pics of all of his coins. It would be a full time job for someone. Hey, I wonder if he would hire me. Then I could pick out the ones I want first!! Sounds like a good idea to me.

  • I like the color on the reverse. The obverse, mmmm? I have some mercs for my 43 date and all mint set. But they are blast white. The set is a non toned work in progress. I must admit that I have seen some I guess you would call it a champagne tone that were beautiful. But pricey.

I quite arguing with dealers a good while back. All it does is hack him and me off and serves no further point. If they say something to knock the registry, I just smile. It's from guys like that that I make good money off of.
