What will pop the toned coin bubble?

U have to admit it. Most toned coins are way overvalued. I know I know if sheep I mean people want it they will pay for.

The same was true of the technology stock buyers of yesteryear!

Exactly what will pop the bubble I couldn't say, but it will eventually play itself out. It may perhaps stay high for the nicely colored lightly toned coins, but for the black ones and the ones that are hard to see through the toning that are getting exhorbinant prices now - those will fall asleep someday.

I still have a real problem with how a black coin can get MS68...that still baffles me. In my grading experience anything above MS65 had to have its original minted color.

I agree that many toned coins are overpriced, but I don't agree that the best of the best are overpriced. There is a wide and eager collecting base who love monster toned coins. Unfortunately, there are very few monster toned coins to appease the demand. I own numerous "finest known" or near finest known 20th century toned coins and I'm not parting with any of them, even though I could rake in some serious cash...The fundamental question becomes "where can I get another one?" Answer: I can't get one!....Really great coins seem to be bought up quickly at large premiums, then they remain in the buyer's safety deposit box "until death do us part." Same is not true of neat brilliant coins -- you CAN REPLACE a cool brilliant coin.

Could someone, ANYONE post a scan of an MS68 black coin? I've never seen one although I have occassionally heard them referenced, in threads like this one.

Every Gem that I saw at the Texas Bullion table in Long Beach was awesome and in my opinion worth the premium. I saw some stunning lincolns. But I often buy what I like, and am not overly concerned with future values, it's nice if the values of my coins work in my favor, but if they don't oh well. I could never get the 16k back that I invested in my 64 vw or the 9k that is currently being invested in a fuel injected 406 small block for my 56 Chevy, but the end result for me is enjoyment.image

I don't have a link, but it was an MS68 graded Washington quarter that was on Heritage sometime recently. I saw the image and about fell out of my chair the coin was so ugly black. It was only "partially" black, the rest was a mix from the black to red-brown rust color to the normal white...my point was, I thought a coin had to be well preserved to get a grade like that...

    1. A nice television expose', like a 60 MINUTES program that features interviews with coin doctors and collaborating dealers. Videos of AT'ed coins coming out of elaborate ovens like bagels popping off a bagel toaster. Examples of AT'ed coins being sent to PCGS and NGC and comming back slabbed MS-65 ... Hidden camera sales of AT'ed coins to collectors and dealers at major coin shows. image

Hidden tapes of Dr. Coin paying off AT experts with thick brown envelopes full of $100 bills. image

Lots of proof with pictures and interviews. I'd really like to see the ovens.image

If this scenario ever occurs - POP!!! goes the bubble.image

I've been buying quite a few lately, so that is always a good indication that they are at their highest levels and will fall in value soon.

    I'm with relayer,

If the 60 MINUTES scenario doesn't happen, as soon as I start buying heavily in toned coins the bubble is guaranteed to burst. Anybody want to pay me off to stay out of the market?image

The *craze* over toned coins is possibly due to two reasons, IMO:

    1. It's a backlash against the previous craze over blast white coins, and the fact that most of the specimens from Morgans on down to the current look pretty much the same. Most of the Walkers, Bens and Washingtons are untoned. To the casual observer walking the aisles, these coins look about as similar as looking at an entire exhibit devoted to Monet's works. Really, how many water lilies can one take?

    2. Prices, in general, are going up. Perhaps the coin buying public just need another way to show how great their wares are...

Toned coins are a joke. They are damaged. They are worthless. They are all artificially toned. Junk! Junk! Junk!

Because I feel bad for the suckers that have purchased this crap, I will help you recover some of your investment.

I will pay 10% under Bluesheet for any colorfully toned commemoratives. That's the best I can do. Obviously since we are dealing with damaged crap, I will have right of refusal.

The biggest problem with your theory is that people bought tech stocks as an investment to try and make money, most of the people who buy toned coins (at least all of them I know) buy because they like them and have no intention of selling them anytime soon.

I don't think anything will pop it per se. I think too many people are looking at toned coins (on both sides) with hyper-critical glasses or fawning eyes. The reality is, that toned coins (that are attractive) are more appealing than white coins sometimes. And ultimately people are paying for what is appealing. Why do brand name soaps sell for more than store/generic brand? It isn't because the product is better but that the packaging makes it more appealing. No matter how you slice it, this is true. And you don't see proctor and gamble or j&j worrying too much about the pop in soaps.

Even artificially toned coins that are extremely well done will not pop it. They can still be very attractive. Now, 100 years from now when it turns black from the chemicals, they'll select themselves out of the coin population. But until then, there is nothing that will turn away someone who likes something pretty.

I've taken a lot of psychology and consumer behavior classes for my marketing degree. And I'll tell you this, the people who purchase a coin solely on its technical merit account for nearly absolute zero of sales. Whether you acknowledge it or not, you're always influenced in what you purchase. The same with untoned and toned coins. It's part appeal, part manipulation, and part subtle influence.

What is and isn't over priced is a matter of opinion. Opinions and taste change. If you're collecting for the shear enjoyment of collecting and you've got a significant disposible income and you happen to like toned coins who's to say that any particular premium is over the limit whether we're taking toned or blast white or a super grade "rarity." I have my opinion and the reasons for that opinion but everyone is free to make that determination on their own.

It's unfortunate that some feel this urge to try an ruin the market for toned coins. I think in the long run those attempts end up being a blight on the coin industry as a whole.

    DOO

Don't flatter yourself. I was talking in general terms not about you specifically. I also said "try to." I think the hobby as a whole and the market for toned coins will survive the doctoring and deception that goes along with it (things done by people that have zero concern for numismatics, the joy of collecting or the livelihood it provides for some).

for me there are many dipped white coins and toned coins and thick skinned natural "white" coins

if a coin is extraordinary and is toned or original white this never ever goes out of style maybe it
doesnot get the hype as much as it does
currently but it never goes out of style and maybe there are lots of average so-so toned coins that are
    benefitting
from this so called hot hot market in toned coins but after all is said and done

really great coins be it toned dipped blast white or original white never dipped coins if a coin has the
    look of
extraordinary eye appeal with monster exceptional qualities this is always in style and never goes
    out of fashion

i am sure maybe it might be a little more popular at times and garner more attention but such is life

collectors like students going from grade school to high school to higher education this is a process
    and as a collector
matures he she finds themselves apprecaiting toned coin really exceptuional toned coins never
    touched screwed
with coins original white coins think skinned coins coins with really great attributes like deep cameo
    proof coins
made that way to show off the mintmasters work well coins like these never ever go out of style and

on a journey a numismatist collector wahtever you call it delelops an apprecaition as such which
    time and experience
only seem to hone to a greater apprecaition and desire of such things of beauty and rarity that are a
    cut above
the rest of the 99% of the average stuff yes stuff that is out there!

and of course coins like this cause a desire hence demand hense higher prices always have and
    always will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sincerely michael

also be it an original white coin or a great!! monster fantasticly toned coin or a blast white ultra
    cameo proof coin
if they have the look and are extraordinary looking to the eye these coins will always be in demand
and will rise over 99% of just the stuff that is out there

make no mistake about it when someone is a true collector and starts to put time effort into coins
    they develop
    an apprecaition of such

needful things things of rarity and exceptional buauty that stand heads and tails about the rest! and
    this a small
percentage of what is shown on the boards touted as great coins are really for the most part are not
    few are most are not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

abd so creates its own market

it does take time and expertise to appreactie these coins and nothing in life for the most part comes
    easy
even the symphony conductor didnot get where he is just by taking one course but years of study
    and practise
    and many hours rehearseing

just like in coins study apprecaition looking at many coins and developing a sixth sense of when a
    coin is a
    really great piece

a metamorphsis so to speak and that is great!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don;t buy the assumption that toned coins are "overpriced". if someone is willing to pay the asking price for something, then it is appropriately priced. therefore, there is no "toned coin bubble".
