Packing modern proof? Best way? Help!

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
I did a search and didn't find anything.

I want to send some modern proof coins in for certification.

What is the best way to pack, so no scratches from the holders, no haze from the holder, or any other problems in which may be caused by shipping the coin(s) to PCGS?

I look forward to your help.

  • I assume you are leaving them in the mint holders. When I send a slabbed coin I always wrap that sucker in HandyWrap or bubble wrap. Also I pick a box that is large enough to afford some protection, but not overly large so any sliding around can occur. But that is just sending coins to other collectors or on rare occassions to a dealer. But I do not see why PCGS would have a problem with this method. I am sure that regular submitters here may have a better method. Good luck on your submission.

    Tony,

I use the brittle flips with no polybag. Obviously, you would then want to bubblewrap the coin, and ship in a padded mailer. BTW - When I fold the flip, I put a small piece of scotch tape over the unfolded end. That way, the tape is outside the flip. Good luck.

Yes, the mylar flip without polybag and maybe consider an expedited delivery (less time in fluctuating environments).

I've also been wondering if by sending a coin in its mint issued capsule for PCGS to remove, may increase the chance of fingerprints. Forutnately, I haven't had the experience (knock on wood) of a PCGS fingerprint, but it has been mentioned enough for me to consider removing my own coins from the difficult capsules.

  • With so many people complaining about their coins not making it to PCGS when traveling by FedEx, you should be SURE to insure the package, regardless of service. Personally, I like to use Certified US Mail, with postal insurance.

Always wrap each coin in bubblewrap. Then use lots of padded protection around the bubblewrap wrapped coins.

Do poly bags leave discoloration on the coins? I worry that the hard (safe) flips will allow the coin to move around during shipping and scratch the coin.

    Tony,

That hasn't been my experience. The polybags will discolor proof coins in a very short period of time. As an experiment, take one of your lesser coins that you know isn't worth submitting, and put it in a polybag for two weeks, and remove it and take a look. PVC damage will be beginning, and the lubricant used in the bag's production will also be on the surface of the coin. You may also see the clouding that so many have reported. As for the coins sliding around in the mylar flips, I've never had one damaged that way. Just my opinion.

    Thank you, DHeath.

I guess the hard flips is the way to go. I will use the round mint holders when the coin comes in it for further protection. It is the loose ones I most worry about. It would be a shame to send a coin in and get a lower grade because of hairlines.

    Tony,

I use ET Kointainer brand SAFLIPS exclusively, with no poly bag. When I first started submitting, I encountered HUGE problems with hazing on proof coins - I RUINED many along the way. Supercoin recommended these, so I started testing here with various packaging methods. He was right. I have had absolutely no problems with hazing since.

To stabilize the coin and prevent slide rub during shipping, I use Safe-T-Mailers and pack them two coins to each, than ship them boxed with whatever padding material I have laying around, whether it be peanuts or bubble wrap. I also only ship my submissions on Mondays to reduce the possibility that they get stuck somewhere over a weekend.
