The best way to tell if a coin is proof or not (Especially with satin proofs) is to look at the eges of the lettering. If they are squared off, then it is likely a proof. This is because of the multiple strikes. It has a tendency to flatten and sharpen the details. Especially around the rim. The DMPL and PL strikes are made mostly from heavily polished dies, but are struck only once, so you don't generally see that squaring off you see on proofs. Another point is that it takes a little research. Not every series or year or mint has DMPL/PL strikes, so you can compare against the population estimates of proof strikes for a given year/mint and how many DMPL/PL strikes are out there to help guide you.
  • Does anyone have pictures of an MS and a PR? Thanks for the info nwcs.
