1971 graded topps set

well,
no bids on the complete 71 topps graded set.I was wrong ....thought someone might bid on this one.

  • I'm not surprised. Very few people are willing to pay premiums for late vintage graded sets of that size now.

It's a shame because the seller "deserves" it for all the work put in. The environment just isn't good enough now, but it will be again one day.

I'm betting that Steve isn't losing a whole lot of sleep over it either.

Its also possible that people waited for it to close to contact him and play "lets make a deal!"

He'd probably do well with that type of item if he listed it in a Mastro or Superior auction. He needs to hit the channels that draw in the heavy hitters that will drop that kind of coin at a drop of a hat. I don't think the asking price was unreasonable.
  • It's a lovely set and now that the sale is closed, I shall comment.

The price was right, but IMHO, where's the challenge? I would much rather buy a partially graded set and chase the others, than have a shake n' bake, already completed package.

Maybe people will not pay a premium for the set because nearly all the cards came through his own submissions (cheapest way to build a set)...so the thought is that he has a fraction of SMR into the set. That being said, buyers may want to "shake him down" for a lesser price (ie. not pay retail)) knowing he will still make out profit wise.

    Just a thought,

  • I wonder if it would work so well to sell through the large auction houses where, granted, there are more big hitters, but where the big hitters would shy away from a set without 9's (this is not a 1950's set). I presume that Steve has sold off a large percentage of his 9's and all of his 10's to other collectors, including myself. Perhaps Steve should have kept his 9's and put them in with the set with the 8's as an incentive to get someone to pay up for the whole set. Andiehaley (Keith) did that with me and it enticed me to buy his set (in addition to the fact that he is a really nice guy).
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

  • Maybe, maybe not for the fact he killed the premium already on the private sales of the 9's
or he still has them for this is what I'm thinking you should buy the 8's for they are 9's in 8

<< <i>Your buying from the 71 guru and he deserves his cash!! >>

This is silly. A premium should be payed depending on who submitted the card?

<< <i>All of you are buying the holder makes >>

According to you, we should buy the "submitter" and not the card or holder...

  • Reading Gator5's posts is like trying to follow a rap artist with a lisp. I just can't do it. He writes emails the same way. I tried to contact him about some '65s once and based on his reply, I couldn't make head nor tails out of what he was offering.

Life's too short to hire an interpreter, so I just passed on the whole thing.
  • I wonder where the market really is for these sets. I'll be curious to see where the 65 set in Mastro's auction ends - I'm currently high on it, and didn't think I'd stay there this long. Could still go for 50% above my current bid, but I wonder how much room is really left there...

Toppsgun - love your sig line. I've got to remember that - it may make it into my top 5 quotes some day! Still trails my basic philosphy in life - "Sometimes, you've just got to say, WTF."
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • Guys-Let's try not to bask anyone's eloquence in writing. I don't think any of us are on the short list for the Pulitzer anyway. I've dealt with Gator5 on several transactions, and have had no problems whatsoever (with the trade or his e-mails).

Re-submitted for spelling correction! See, noone's perfect (especially me)!
  • In the future, you can simply 'edit' out spelling errors, rather than have to repost something. (see the far right hand bottom corner)
