    I wonder if that coin wasn't stored in a Whitman type folder for a while and maybe cleaned up also during its life?

    It looks to me like what PVC slime does to copper. I have seen proofs that have come out of the old Harco albums with PVC slide pockets look like that after the plasticizer was removed.
