Why does this auction smell fishy to me?

Because it is?, or the coin looks to good to me, right over a disclaimer a mile long about no implied collectibility, etc, etc, etc?

any advice.

ps: Maybe the seller "Curly's Gas"???

That coin is doctored. It was likely done with a jewelers tumbler. There's a thread here about that guy's coins from a couple of days back, but since I have no clue how to find it without reading through all of them, I'll digress to the expertice of some of the better board drivers around here for a linky.

I would HIGHLY disrecommend considering buying anything from that seller, all of his coins are severely ruined.

Is that the alarm bell?

The current high bidder is one I recognize from some other bidding. He has not been timid about feedback when he considers the items undergraded on arrival.
I've been educated to some degree from checking his feedback on items I've been interested in but lost to him!

The surface isn't exactly what I'd expect in the way of mint lustre, more reminiscent of rezinc'd '43 lincolns somehow.
