I go with the "Nice AND ugly" option. It has both attractions and detractions, in my opinion. Nice colors, but blotchy. The fingerprint is the biggest detraction.
Weighing the good and the bad, and not being a Rainbow Morgan enthusiast, my overall position is one of neutrality on that.
LM I don't think it's a fingerprint. The seller says it textile and the lines look to straight to me to be a fingerprint. No I didn't buy it yet the auction dosen't end for a few days yet.
See? Sorry, but that just doesn't do anything for me. Dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks. The colors are pretty, but I can't quite appreciate any kind of mottling or textile toning or any other uneven toning. Call me weird.
I guess it would be pretty dull if we all liked the same thing, though. The particular type of coin everyone loved would have an astronomical price and the rest would be spent at face or bullion value.
Placid- take your icon coin, for example. Now THAT is the kind of colorful toning I could go for.
I realize these Morgans y'all have displayed are the real thing, probably much more "original" than the blast-white ones out there, but I just can't seem to bring myself around. BigD5 and I had a PM discussion about toning last night. Somebody had posted a pic of some coins and was asking opinions. I had to keep quiet because I thought the coins were hideous. (They weren't Morgans, but they had varying degrees of blotchy colors, some of which were quite wild, but many of which were drab. I guess I was in the minority for disliking them). If toning subdues the luster of the coin, I usually don't like it.
OK - I'll be the first one to admit that I bashed toned coins when I first came on here - but now I really like them - there are some that look funky, but as Lordmarcovan said - to each his own. Personally I like the kid's coin, though I won't pay too much of a premium for these coins. If it's a choice between a run of the mill white coin and one with some character for the same or similar price, I'll go for character.
I have all the coins I want but one and that one is too expensive for me right now so I am trying to fill in the morgan dates I am missing with either toned or dmpl ones within a reasonable price until I get my tax return next year.
Now, I like those four Morgans a little better. The toning on the top two is a little heavy for my taste, but it looks a bit more even. Too bad about the white area in front of Liberty's mouth on the top right coin- the colors on that one are cool, even to my eyes, but she looks like she's smoking!
"Character" is a very valid consideration in shopping for a coin. Good point. I guess interesting character is a totally individual set of values; no two people will see it identically.
Placid- That coin has the same toning as my 78 and even the same type of textile toning! I bought mine because I liked the wierd green toning that it appeared to have from the picture on ebay when I bought it but I when I got it the toning was way better than the picture showed! and when tilted a little in the light it looks awesome! I think yours will look like this as well. mike
Thank's Frank! I got this on ebay after someone here started a thread on how ugly it was- well I thought it would be worth $170 to find out what it looked like in person. I really think Placid's coin will look the same when tilted a little. mike
LOL- I have gotten one or two nice additions to my Holey Coin Vest after folks started "Oh, what a shame" threads.
Other people's heartbreakers are my treasures, at least when it comes to holed coins.
If that ain't a case of dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks, I don't know what is!
Tell ya what- if all of y'all start Holey Coin Vests, or at least Holey Coin Hats, of your own, I will start buying textile toned Morgan dollars. Then we can each claim to have "converted" an unbeliever.
You don't even need an all-gold, all pre-1900 hat, like mine.
Placid, I am going to be brave on a thread that is positive about your coin. I don't like it! The greens, rust and grey tones all have a milky haze (at least in the scan). Toned coins are like art, plenty of room for personal taste and interpretation.
Trime - Its really hard to make a definitive assessment from a scan, especially from a coin toned like this - what you see on the pic and what you see in real life are miles appart!
Frank (FC57Coins), I agree entirely with your comment. Unfortunately, we can only judge by what we can see. I covered my bottom by adding the parenthesized caveat. "The greens, rust and grey tones all have a milky haze (at least in the scan)." Might be a spectacular coin and a poor picture. Hope so.
As FC57 said it's tough to make a judgement based on a scan. I'd imagine given the grade that the coin has a fair amount of luster. None of it comes through on the scan. My guess is the scan doesn't do the coin justice.
