Toning

I too collect State Quarter Bags like Justin. If I keep them sealed will they tone?

Just in general, what causes a well taken care of coin to tone anyway?

Reaction to chemicals in the enviroment.
I don't know if state quarters will tone well, what are they made from zinc?
  • Placid,

I believe State Quarters are made out of whatever they have been using since they stopped silver...probably some sort of alloy but I think they have copper in them. ANYBODY correct me if I am wrong.

    I looked it up.
Outer layer 25% nickel 75%copper. Inner layer 100% copper.
I have seen a few copper coins with nice toning.
  • Placid,

I thought there was copper in there. If you look at a quarter sideways you will see a copper like tone.

    How does nickel tone?

If I wanted to prevent toning is there a way to do so?

I have seen some great toned nickels. From the shields thru the jefferson's.

Keeping them in a airtight container with desiccant should do it.
There is also a product called intercept sheilds but they are not practical with bags of coins.
  • Thanks, Placid!
  • J.S,

I infer from your previous comment that since modern Proof Sets are encased in plastic, they should not tone at all?
