virus

Maybe someone can help with this but during the past 2 days I have received emails from several members of he board with virus's. They are Chris Renaud, carddude99, basilone, and brucemo. My Norton's says that it can't remove this virus. It is W32.Yaha.F@mm.
Any suggestions on what to do? I know this isn't pertinent to the registry but if other's have the same virus then I definitely want them to know. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

I don't know how to remove the beast (My condolances), but I too have received infected emails in the last 3-4 days My Norton AV (the newest version 2003) caught it and killed it before my system got infected. Folks need to take care to update their own systems and try to prevent the spread of this virus.image

I have been receiving emails for 6-8 months or longer now with downloads attached which I believe are viruses. I did some cross-checking a while back because some of the addresses looked famliar. They were all Ebay users that dealt in either buying or selling sportcards. When ever I get one , I go to ebay search seller , type in the email , and sure enough they are registered to Ebay and sell or buy cards. Somehow someone must be linking them up and they bounce back to eachother. I have received as many as 6 in a day.

I too get 'em all the time w/ the attachments, seems that everyone on the board is at 1 time listed, my last 3 had BRUCEMO, BASILONE & DANMARKEL listed. I delete them, so hopefully no harm done...jay

    Jay (and everyone else),

Please be aware that viruses can come from multiple sources. If you received one with my name as the sender, I assure you that it did not originate from me since I too have the latest version of Norton Anti-Virus and I download the latest DAT files constantly and all incoming as well as outgoing e-mails are reviewed and screened by the program.

I too receive about 3 or 4 viruses a day. It used to be about 3 to 4 a week and then it suddenly jumped up to huge numbers on Oct. 17th and 18th. During that 48 hour span I received approximately 35 e-mails with viruses and then has since tapered off to 3 or 4 a day.

Having an anti-virus program is a MUST!

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Dan, I never for 1 moment thought that you originated them. I knew it was from the message boards since the names are familiar here. As a rule I never open any attachments unless I am expecting some info from that sender...jay

I might have one but I doubt it. I've looked at incoming viruses supposedly from people that I know, and the headers look faked. I would think that people who got one "from" me would also see faked headers.

    To everyone....

I too have Norton Anti-Virus and actually have paid for live updates through Oct 2003. For ease I will just copy what Dan wrote as the same goes for me as well.

I too have been getting them from various board members as well.

    Jay,

It's no big deal and no offense was taken. Some viruses attack a person's address book and it will use some of the e-mail accounts as originating senders. Just out of curiousity, is the name that's used "danmarkel"? That exact name is not used on my e-mail account, which then leads me to believe that someone is intentionally using my eBay ID for sending out virus e-mails.

Dan - I forget, as I deleted it the second it was rec'd. Lately I've been getting a bunch that lists 1903 World Series as the header, with a little bit of info in the Email and of course prompting the user to open the attachment, perhaps I've rec'd 20 of these w/ many different "senders"...jay

Dan, I didn't get one from you but the one I got with John's name just said from Basilone. I didn't believe other's were sending out emails with virus's but it's odd how they use other's names in email messages. I believe the heading was something like 1903 World Series in the subject line.

I too have gotten similar virus type emails with the names of 7 or 8 members on this board. Its funny the virus only comes from people from this board.

    But John,

Can you think of a more incestuous community????image

I get them to - although my Norton identifies them as the "klez" virus. Basically, they infect someones PC and then use their address book to send the emails to anyone that they've ever dealt with. My guess is that we do get them from emails that we don't recognize as well - but we just blow them away. The ones that we do recognize are the board members!

It's getting rediculous. I must have received 10-15 today. Has anyone received them from me 'gemint@charter.net'? I saw a few 'delivery failure' emails that I didn't send. I assume it was the worm working my address book.

By the way, I just received 86 emails signing me up for various websites ranging from porn to yahoo retail stores. I really hope there's a way the scumbag who started all this can get caught. They ought to throw him/her in jail for 100 years for being a useless idiot! image

The rrogers@ix.. I know I have done Ebay business with him before. This is tied in with Ebay as much as anything else. I have never received one of these emails and they do not deal with sportcards or memrobilia on Ebay. If you take the email address and plug it in to bidder or seller search on Ebay it will come up with a sportcard account .I have done that atleast 10X.

Another very important thing to keep up to date which hasn't been mentioned yet is using your - Windows Update. There are a number of viruses and worms designed to take advantage of some features/holes if you are using Microsoft's Outlook or Outlook Express. A very common problem are emails containing a worm which is executed simply by viewing the message in the preview pane. You don't have to open or execute any attachment. The Windows Update fixes these bugs/features/holes in the software that worms and viruses exploit. Having the latest virus updates is not enough. It won't detect a virus because it's just doing what the system allows it to do. You need Windows Update along with your virus updates to seal all the holes. To update your Windows software - in your Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Tools, then Windows Update. It checks your system and displays a list of critical updates. If you've never done this there will be a number of them. You won't be able to download all of them at once. Some of them need to be downloaded independently. Just install as it allows you, follow directions to reboot, and repeat until there are no critical updates left.

    Brucemo,
I just got a self opening e-mail attachment (formatted as a .bat file) that got through Norton
entitled DOCTOR. This was bounced through an aol proxy and looks to have originated from this guy "BernPFife@aol.com". Now this thing appears to be an Associated Press News file about an accident in Russia "Doctor Gas kills 119 in Moscow". it does not appear to be a lethal .exe file. Anybody have any insight on what is going on here??. As my only contact or connection with bruce through my current e-mail HAS to be this board.

I know bernpfife@aol.com. his name is david and he's a good guy. don't think he would intentionally send a virus. i believe he is an opthamolagist....so the doctor thing sounds right. anyhow, hope this is of some help! tim

I forgot to mention the "sender" of my e-mail bomb was Brucemo.
I'm certainly not accusing any of the named parties of anything intentional.
There does not seem to be any harm done.

I got this e-mail this evening and wanted to pass it along!!! tim

    Subj: PSA message board virus
Date: 12/3/02 5:28:24 PM Central Standard Time
    From: BernPFife
    To: PROMETHIUS88

    Tim,

Could you possibly copy and paste this note to the PSA message board members for me? I would do it myself except I haven't joined the board yet and when I tried today, I couldn't because it didn't recognize my email address. So I'm trying to get that squared away. In the mean time, I want to let people on the boards know what I know about this virus. So please give them this message for me if you will:

"My name is David Moss and my email is "bernpfife@aol.com". I have received the same virus emails that everyone else has. I get alot of emails from MAILER-DAEMON with different subjects. I don't know where these have originated from, but evidently the virus has corrupted some of my computer files. I have Norton 2002 but it is not updated yet. I am furiously trying to get it updated so I can squash this bug. The DOCTOR file came from my computer, I know. So I know the virus has latched in my PC. I can assure you, I am NOT sending out any viruses emails intentionally. I have corresponded via email to some of the board members about some Topps sets and PSA cards. This bug is probably going through my address book and giving you all the some of the same emails I get. I am very frustrated about this myself with my own computer and am trying to kill this thing. I'm sorry to all of you that has gotten the DOCTOR email. I am a fellow collector and and eye doctor. I hope to be on the message board soon and join you all. You seem to be a great bunch of guys. Hopefully this will be over soon. Good luck collecting to all of you"

    Sincerely,
    David Moss

I received a virus type email today. It was a mailer-daemon type email. Anyways inside the text there was the following:

    To: support@sgccardregistry.com
    Subject: DOCTOR
    Date: Tue,03 Dec 2002 17:21:47 PM

could this be the root cause of our problem?

Well I think I am infected. I got some emails from people saying they got emails from me but could not open them. I also got emails from Basilone,RRogers and a few others. I know these guys did not send them to me for they looked odd. I also got some of the Mailer -Daemon emails. If anybody gets them from me It was not intentional. My address is djj99@aol.com and if I send an email you will be expecting it.

Stump - In the normal view of one of these emails, if it shows you as the person who sent it, it is highly unlikely that you are the person who sent it. A different email is usually displayed in order to make tracing it back to the source impossible for the typical user. A different email is also entered in the hopes that you will eventually get an email from somebody who appears to be a trusted source, open it, and then also become infected. If somebody has 100 people in their address book, the bad email is sent out to everybody, with any one of the other 99 people displayed as the person who sent it. Some of these people may be strangers, and the email will be avoided like the plague. Some of them could come from a mutual acquaintance, and be treated with little to no caution.

I would recommend (if you do not already have it) Norton Anit-Virus protection. Every email that is either send to me or sent by me is scanned for viruses. The program so far has caught all of these "virus type" emails. I have also subscribed to the Live Updates subscription service so that my program will be up to date at all times.

I agree with Basilone. Get the Norton Anti-Virus program. They are typically $40 or so and you may still be able to get a $20 rebate on it.
