Nice 63. But not much more room for bids.
  • I'd have to agree, very nice. image

Is that a planchet or die problem at 10 o'clock on the obv? Otherwise, it looks VERY nice.

It's okay, but there are certain things I don't like about it. What I do like is that the reverse looks to be MS65 and the coin has some great luster. What I don't like is that there is a haze spot at 10:00 on the obverse that may be completely original or may be from a dip that was not completely washed off, hence the blasty appearance of the coin. I also don't like how much light has apparently been used to image the coin as it makes it tough to see what is going on with the surfaces. However, what bothers me the most are the two or three marks on the high point of the cheek on the obverse. This is why the coin received an MS63, most likely. There is some light chatter around the eye, on the muscular portion of the neck and a larger mark at the rear of the base of the neck. These are not an issue with this coin. I just really get distracted by those marks on that open area of the cheek. One last thing, I have seen this seller's images of Washington quarters in the past and then have seen the same coins at shows and I think that the images look nicer than the coins. This is just my opinion. I am not saying that the seller is unethical, immoral or underhanded in any way. I am simply stating that, to me, the Washingtons that I have seen were not as nice in person.

Thanks for the detailed critique Tom. I did notice the spot at the ten oclock position, but until you pointed out the ding on the cheek, I hadn't seen that. Probably the lighting used for the photo.

  • It's a very nice 63. I agree that the scan is too bright. So bright, I can't see what may be going on around the hair and forehead. Based on what I see, it may have a shot at MS64, but not any higher IMO. Although Mint State 37's are tough to come by, I think it has already exceeded what i'd be comfortable paying for it. Bluesheet (sight unseen) on this coin is $73. If i saw the coin in person, and it looked like it does in the scan, I'd pay more for it.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

My first thoughts were that it could be cracked out and sent into NCS to remove the dip residue, but with all the marks on the cheek and neck, I don't think conservation would upgrade it. I like it less and less the more I look at it.

I wish I knew the ins and outs of grading Washington quarters. The slabbed pieces I,ve seen seem to be all over the place.I,ve seen 67s that didnt look near as good as this one.As to the `dip residue`?I,d call it just a water spot.Dip residue would have a brownish color I think.Maybe that spot will turn in a short time but it looks `harmless`for now.
When grading standards loosen up alittle, this one would be a great candidate for a resubmit.
Maybe thats the whole plan for the slab companies.Give us another $30 and we,ll see what we can`t do for ya this time around huh.

yes, this coin has minor imperfections that most likely make this coin deserving of the 63 grade but I am sure bidders are thinking up-grade and I think it stands a good shot at it also but a jump to 64 is really not much of a monetary gain and not really worth spending the money for a chance at up-grade. I would be happy getting this coin as a 63 if I bought it raw. Mike image
  • george has taken a few hits on the face shoulder and base of the neck....nice and bright......no chance for upgrade
