What to do??? Need advice!!

As every knows I have been scowering the banks for half dollars. Well today I bought a $500 box of JFKs expecting the mixed dates I have been getting. What I got was a mint box of 1998-D JFKs, still in mint rolls. So what do I do.

Start opening the rolls and cherrypicking.
Return the box and get brinks rolls.
Sell the box.

The top grade is a MS67. What are the chances of making a 68???

How about sending all the Frankies you have found to me. Can't think of any better advice then that.

  • I'd throw it on ebay and see what happens with it. I've run into some pretty interesting finds before, and done pretty well, but never run into this before. Hopefully I'll do as well as you this weekend as I finally got paid and am gonna try to hit quite a few banks this weekend.

All of Marty's posts got me thinking as well, and I think I'm going to try a box of Kennedys and a box of dollars. Surprisingly my bank said that if I ordered $1, I would get SBAs and not Sacs. Is that unusual?
As for your quandry, I would stick them on Ebay and see what happens as well.

    Michael,
The banks here use Brinks for rolled coin, if you order a roll of dollars you get a mix of SBAs and SACs. The rolls are then recycled, the bags from the counters are returned to Brinks and the coins are re-rolled. I'm surprised how many silver halves I have found in rolls. It runs in cycles, a few months ago I would get $200 in halves and nothing. If anything I return the halves to the bank for a box of mixed...

Put the entire box on eBay. Or sell the rolls individually. Don't open them! If nobody has found a 68 yet, what do YOU think your chances are? You will probably make more money selling the box, but you'll probably have more fun looking through it. It's your call.

All the nice 1998 halves I've found have come from mint sets. I've only tried a dozen or so rolls and didn't have any luck. The rolls bid 11.50 on the coin dealer newsletter. I'd try ebay and see what happens as an original box. You might be able to get a good price for them.

Well... you got them at face... if you made a few 67s, what would the profit be? It's not like you paid a premium to get the chance to look at fresh rolls... I would at least open a few and see if the quality is good... if the rolls are all dogs, sell the rest.

  • Try for the 68 and open the rolls. Whats your upside if you sell the box? Whats your upside if you make a 68? I think its hogwash that the mint sets hold all the good coins. Original rolls at face, open them and roll the dice. If you don't find a 68 spend them and get another box.

    6774 1998-D 50C MS 64-5, 65-16, 66-57, 67-32, 68-0 Total-111

    Here are the pops, I have 1000 coins to sort through. Find a 66 it's worth $30, a 67 is worth $90, make a 68 and Cha-Ching....

I might just have to go through the box and give it a look-see....
