UPDATE (1953 Franklin Half...New Purchase)

It's been nearly 20 years since I have collected coins.
Now that I have started collecting again I'm sure that I will make a few "mistakes" until I get a feel for grading again.

I know that it is hard to grade from a scan, but I just purchased this one on eBay and would like your opinions.
The seller says it's a 66, but I'm just hoping for at least a 65.image

Thanks!!

Jim

    I like it. Original.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

JMOORE, I'm sorry to say that the Franklin you are showing looks counterfit.... But don't feel bad, just to show you how nice some of us board members can be, I'm ready to give you what you paid for this obviously fake coin.

    the girl's got radar!
  • Welcome to the forums.

The toning is very nice. It is difficult to determine the strike from the scan. The typical 1953 will be poorly struck.

    The coin looks very clean.
  • I took your picture and blew it up to screen size. It does look like a nice original mint set coin. Hopefully you got a good deal on it. 1953's are very tough to find in gem condition. I would say - without being able to see the bell lines that you have a good MS65. Good luck with the bell lines!

Looks real nice I can't see the bell lines and have no way to blow it up as i am working off a laptop today but it looks like it would blow out at 65.
PS don't let Lucy see it. image

Ooopppsss Never mind i just read and Lucy has already seen it. image

  • This is what it really looks like and it is going back to the seller.

It must of been the lighting that made it look so good in the auction pic.

Soft strike. No eye appeal to me. image

I have a somewhat more ascerbic eye for what happened. I believe the seller intentionally lied to you to get the auction to generate more bids and a higher selling price and then the seller hoped that the buyer would be too timid to return the item or would not want to go through the hassle and would just eat it. Why do I say that? Because the image in the auction is soooooooo different from what you just posted that I believe there is no way a completely honest and observant seller could have listed the coin with its auction image and could have possibly not mentioned how different the coin looked in reality.

This is assuming that your image is how the coin really looks and also assuming that the auction description did not state that the coin looked nothing like the picture. Too bad.

Damn, that's a dramatic difference! Almost as bad as the screw job I got on an 1825 Bust half.

I'd ask for a FULL refund, including s/h... that is deception... maybe a neutral for such a bad picture, unless he said it was nothing like the pic?

  • The scan does not look exactly like the coin, but it is closer then the photos listed in the auction.

The coin DOES have luster that shows thru the toning but does not show up on the scan. But the color is just not there like it is in the photo. It also has a couple of (what I think are) good sized ticks under the toning on the cheek.

The coins in all of his other auctions look great too.

From his feedback I don't think I'll have a problem returning it. I guess we will see.

    Thanks!!!
