Thanks to PCGS for this opportunity.
Forgot my manners!!
I am a EAC member and love old large cents. i have over 40 PCGS slabbed in my collection. They are all different in some ways particularly color!!
What do graders look for color wise with the early dates??
I have green, red, black brown light brown etc..
Thanks

First, each individual date has its own characteristic color. As you look at a lot of early copper, you become familar with the subtlties of each date. The PCGS graders are aware of this and don't, for example, expect a 1793 Chain cent to have the same brightness as an 1853.
Second, for circulated coins, color is definitely a facter in grade. Overly dark color is a negative. Even, light color is a poitive. This eye appeal facter can add or subtract a few points.
Third, for mint state coins (proofs too), the issue is whether a coin is Brown, Red and Brown, or Red. The PCGS grading book has detailed descriptions of the criteria...as does our online "Lingo"...go to the PCGS home page and click on "Lingo."
Thanks...good question.
