VAM information on an 1884CC needed

I have an 1884 CC Morgan with a die clash very similar to the one on the 1889-O where it says:

<< <i>Clashed "E" Reverse. Can be found with either 1 or 2 clashes. A "Top 10" variety! Rare in all grades. One BU known >>

My dollar doesn't have the clashed E - but it does have the same exact clash on the right hand side of the wreath (viewer's right). In addition, there seems to be some doubling on the leaves of the reverse wreath, there appears to be some doubling of the leaves in the wreath of Liberty, and there is also what appears to be a die chip on the viewer's left hand tip of the reverse wreath. Does anyone have any information on such a variety? I haven't been able to locate anything on an 1884CC.

Thanks!

Frank

    Frank,

As I'm sure you know, aside from the clashed "E", most other clashed dies aren't really significant, and can be found on a great many Morgans. Obviously, the wreath (when clashed) is going to show up in the same place for any coin not out of register.

Regarding the '84-CC, I am unable to find anything other than "a few minor die varieties exist but none command a premium."

I know you, like I, are always on the prowl for a new discovery. I can only suggest that you eliminate it as an already attributed variety, and if unable to, then pursue investigating it as a possible discovery.

I can't attribute it based in the info you have given so far. There are only 4 documented reverses, primarily distinguished by the size or doubling on the mintmark. Give me some details on the MM and on the date, unless, you prefer to do this yourself.

  • Frank,

There isn't anything in the "Big Book" that mentions clashed dies. Clashed dies are very common in all years of mintage, but few have the clashed "E."

The book states "There are a few minor varieties, but none command a premium.

    I hope this helps somewhat.

  • Kewl - thanks Gilbert and JC - I knew that there were a lot of minor varieties, but thought perhaps since the die-clash on this coin was visible to the naked eye maybe it warranted some special attention. No biggie - learned something new - thanks!

  • I have a 83 cc that on the top right of the wreath it has the clashed part from the front and that piece is very dmpl compared to the rest of the coin. also on the left hand side from the top of the wing to the edge of the coin it has a strong line from the clashed front.

it also has other pl parts where the clash took place and really stands out.
