The links are to coins from Heritage auctions. The Type 2 is the first link, Type 1 the second. I use the lettering on the reverse as the easiest way to tell. The type 1 has bolder, thicker lettering most easily differentiated by looking at the lettering in "ONE DOLLAR". Hope this helps.
I've got a proof Ike type 1 (fat lettering in reverse). I didn't know there were different types till I read this thread. I seperated a set I had cause the plastic had cracked and the coins were getting crudy looking. I carefully cleaned them up and they look great!

Give me your good change please. I'll take it from here, nurse.
For me the easiest way to tell them apart is to loo at the second S in STATES. The S's on the two types are completely different styles. Look especially at the bottom tail of the S. On the type 2 it just comes up to the top of the bottom bar of the E. On the type 1 it rises all the up to the bottom of the middle bar of the E and the entire tail is above the bottom bar of the E. Once you know that it becomes an arms length variety and you never need another specimen to compare it to.
