  • Well it sure doesn't look full bell. The strike is too weak. Of course I always have a tough time with scans vs having the coin in my grubby hands.
  • Marty:

I have to agree - it looks like a mushy strike, although the fields are nice and clean from the looks of it. I can't really see the bell lines from the picture so you'll have to decide for yourself if they're there or not. Here is a pic which might help:

I tried a scan of the bell.

  • Great visual there Frank! That is a real lesson in bell lines. I agree with the assessment, as well. A soft strike with nice obverse fields. Seems like some significant marks at 6:00 of the reverse caused by another coin's rim. Don't believe you should consider having the coin certified.

It's always hard to tell from pictures, It may just be FBL, but what concerns me is what appears to be wear in the face and cheek area. If so that is a grade killer...

There are little curls of hair that should be visable to the front of Frankies ear, if these are gone expect ms62 or lower. Atleaset by the standards PCGs is using today. I do have a ms64 worn in this area but in general most ms64's will have this detail.

    LucyBop,

I am not so sure I would agree that the "undefined sideburn (without the 3 splits) limits a coin to less than MS64. This is a high point AND close to dead center, the most problematic area on the obverse of a Franklin.

I too was drawn to the areas that look to be wear, but, it could also be a low-res rendition of the toning. This kind of toning (average) has a tendency to appear like wear. I can't tell from the image. It does appear to be lacking FBL characteristics; particularly for a non "S" '52.

the 3 splits near the sideburn is what made my 50p a ms63, my 50d an ms63, and my 52d a ms62. This was the only problems on these coins..... But, I do have a few that were graded a year ago where some of these went ms64, it seems to me they have tightened down on this....

  • Save your money and don't send it in for grading. It is a MS62-63. The strike is weak on the obverse. There are numerous scuffs across Franklin's cheek, plus the luster looks rather flat to me. Nice high grade Franklins are surprisingly hard to find.

Actually I think this coin is fairly well struck. The weakness in the wisps of hair is typical for a 52 and is due to die wear and not strike. The closeup of the bell lines appears to be FBL, the lines go all the way to the bell crack, but hard to tell from a scan if they are full.

Looks like luster break on the obverse cheek, or maybe even traces of PVC (see also green tone on reverse). Some marks evident.

I grade the scan 63FBL, and would not send in as this a more common date.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

There you have it Marty, you got some very good opinions and I have to leave one final one, If you like this Frankie, then it may be worth it to slab it! I am happy with all my raw to slabbed Frankies, I don't agree with some of the tough grading, but ol Ben is proud in the new PCGs holders...... I have many more that I will submit alittle at a time that will be in the ms62 - 64 range, and a 62 I have isn't full bell yet it is a very attractive coin that I want to get slabbed.....
