  • So the mint gets $.875 cents each in the roll and $.675 cents each if you buy the bag. Wow what a difference!!!

  • Can you not buy these from the Bank anymore when they are released? Are these "Special" Kennedys" that one would buy from the Mint and pay a premium for?
  • mint issued only

WHY are you people buying them? Hoping for high grade ones? Hoping that they will rise in value due to their <cough> low mintage? image
  • mint issued only, will not be sent to banks. only place ANYONE can get them is from the mint for collectors.

gm.........4.5 million made. who knows maybe they will be worth $10 each in a few years. If not then just spend them and lose .37 each, big deal

$15.50 for official US Mint paper wrappers... and no more free shipping for internet buyers. Think I'll pass. Order too many unc sets this year anyways image
  • IF YOU ORDER MORE THAN 100.00 WORTH YOU GET EXPEDITED UPGRADED SHIPPING FOR 3.95
  • I'll order a single roll set for my collection, but no speculating for investment.
I waited for these to be offered before ordering the Mississippi roll set to save on shipping fees.

I think it's a crock that the Mint would make unneeded coins for circulation, then sell them at a profit. I guess we can look forward to this being a regular event every year with Sacs and Kennedys. Then there will be a year when they don't need any dimes for circulation, and we'll have to buy those at a premium too. And some guy will get a big bonus for suggesting that they Mint could make an equivalent profit by just minting 1/100 the number of kennedys but charging 100x the price, while saving a lot on manufacturing and handling costs. Next step: mint just one, and sell it for a million dollars.

It's one thing to make proof and mint sets for collectors - after all, they are packaged and are *supposed* to have received special handling - but to sell bulk coins made for circulation at a markup strikes me as being pretty far afield from what the Mint's job is.

And I notice this week's Numismatic News has an editorial praising the Mint for their decision to sell Kennedys this way! I am shocked.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

If the only way to get them is to pay a premium how many will get circulated and worn?
I would guess not very many.
  • I agree with Kranky and Flash - it's a rip, a crock, an overload - or is it called price gouging.

No thanks! The quality in the mint sets was low enough for me, and the principle of it smells a little off.

If I may add my two cents without criticism or judgement, I forsee these being a flop, as in the pst, the mint will most likely produce millions of these (Please someone correct me tactfully if I am in error here) causing the price of them to crash.

I am in total agreement with Kranky, I feel the approach they are taking is wrong. Good that they are producing them, but the wrong apprach of selling. Then, the mint is known to make millions of the coins causing the market of them to crash.

My opinion, make a certain amount for the collectors, afterall part of the collection attraction is having a rare coin right? I would suggest making enough for the collectors but don't make the same amount that would be minted for circ then sell them all for a premium. They do this knowing they WILL make a proffit then they can just melt down the rest that does not sell and make more next year.

    Ray

PS. This is my opinion, I shared it with you as this is the purpose of these forums. Take it for what it is, just my opinion.
  • Kranky hit the nail on the head on this one.

I guess the Mint figures if they can stamp out an ounce of silver as a Modern Commemorative and sell it for $32 why not run some Kennedy's thru the press and overcharge for those as well.

    Such a deal

  • Just want to point out that the mintage is higher than the 4.5 million. Per the last NN the mint had also sold 982,117 unc sets for 2002. Bringing total mintage(so far) on the 2002 halfs to 6,464,234.
