How do you find estate sales?

I was wondering how you went about finding estate sales? And for that matter how do you buy a business strike SAE/GAE. What is the price for these fromthe mont? How do I get them to sell to me??

Estate sales will be listed in the newspaper. MS SAE are sold to only a few distributors by the mint. Contact your local dealer.

Has anyone actually found coins at estate sales? I've only been to 3 or 4 but haven't seen any coins.

  • The last estate sale I attended saved the coins until the last item, and they were locked in a glass case.

The kids had skillfully removed the keys using scissors from the PVC pockets, leaving a patchwork of worn Morgans whose dates were visible, but the mintmarks weren't!

They were auctions in 'strips' of PVC, without further inspection, and after the bidding for the proof sets and commems.

Better odds on eBay without pics at this one.

The really bad new was that I hung around for two hours, and ended up bidding on furnishings that filled the van first, and eventually picked up a couple of worn Morgans, no CC's, but one S key in Fine. A lovely affair, with catered funnel cakes from a trailer.
Two dealers attended and bid wisely on the proof sets and commems, low margin between their final bids.
    Every day is a gift.
  • My only Estate sale experience was a waste of time. It took 2 hours out of my day, and the only "coins" (which were advertised) were some Chinese ones that looked like bad souvenier jobs. I think the key to these Estate Sales is to establish a good relationship with the dealer that you are a serious buyer and that you will give a fair price provided you get first shot at all coins.
  • Most classified ads have estate sales listed on sat and sun. I think the folks who run them usually keep the good stuff for themselves. They usually also have an antique store as well. Hardly ever any coins at estate sales.

I have been to a few advertised estate sales. Some were actually legit. Some unscrupulous auctioneers work with coin dealers to help get rid of unwanted material. There are some real ones though.I found a 1942/1 Merc dime in an bank envelope with 99 other Mercs.I also found a MS62 1915 BN Lincoln.I thought it looked great.I sent it to PCGS and it was certified.I paid $2,and sold it for $68.I hope this helps

  • Look for an auctioneer near where you live and keep tabs on his auctions.
I go to Nick Beyer's from time to time.
