The first public performance of the words and music together of the Star-Spangled Banner was on October 19, 1814 in Baltimore at the Holliday Street Theatre. A Mr. Hardinge sang it following the performance of the play Count Benyowsky. Although popular, the Star-Spangled Banner did not become the National Anthem until 1931 by an Act of Congress.
