R&I "Select Pick Specials"

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
I'm sure some of you have seen these listings on eBay, and was wondering what your thoughts were. In the listings, he says in part:

<< <i>They are coins I am thrilled to be able to inventory. Many are either irreplaceable, or border on the irreplaceable. >>

That second line caught my attention in particular, since it appears in an auction for a PCGS graded PR67CAM Accented Hair Kennedy. While it is certainly true that many coins are "irreplaceable" or border on such, this coin ain't one of them. I own two in that grade myself, and it has a pop of 46.

Now, we all know that Rick is the "god" of cameo coinage but to my mind this smacks of a bit too much hype and a bit too little coin. The sizzle, rather than the steak.

What do you guys think?

Sorry Russ, no offense, but I think I'll wait to comment till I hear DCAMFranklins expert opinion.

    Lucy,

I'm waiting in fervent anticipation for his no doubt invaluable insight.

  • Well Russ:

I guess if 47 of us had AH Kennedy's and we lost one, it'd be kinda irreplaceable - until he or SHE came up with enough dough for one! image
  • Rick does hype things up a bit sometimes, but I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. He has a lot of enthusiasm in this hobby and I think it shows in his advertising. I think he tries to keep his clientele motivated by sometimes trying different marketing approaches; sometime his ideas are good, sometimes not.

You are correct about Rick being the main man of cameo coinage. He definitely knows how to find the best.

You must remember.Rick Tomaska doesn't do the posting. The statement is a little overboard. You are nit picking.I'm sure if you E-mailed them,or him they'd probably ammend the description.

    merz2,

He doesn't do the postings, correct. But, he wrote the statement and decides which auctions in which it is included.

I have no wish to see the auction amended. He's perfectly free to market in any way he chooses. I just think it's an interesting topic for discussion.

EDIT: I'd also note that I've purchased quite a few coins from R&I and will continue to do so when they have one I need at a price I can afford.

  • "Select Pick Specials" can mean anything. From what/where are they selected from? Picked from what? Why are they "special" ? I`m not being jerk about it, I consider these as legitimate questions from a buyer.

So far, Most of what I seen of Rick`s inventory is quality. The quote

<< <i>They are coins I am thrilled to be able to inventory. Many are either irreplaceable, or border on the irreplaceable >>

I would think would put him in a comprimising position or close to it. Maybe his angle is I don`t know what is good. Do you? So it reads as substance but it`s open to interpetation.

    Russ:

I think you are being a bit technical here. After all, he says "many" not all are irreplaceable or border on irreplaceable. I think a group of e-listings normally has a broad range of pieces and grades. All the way from very beautiful and rare to affordable and nice. I am sure most of the pieces R&I sells are very good quality. I think Rick's prices in his e-specials are much more down to Earth then typical for him.

This is kind of like the NGC "star" coins he was hyping as top pop coins.... (the program just started!!) Listing them for crazy money.... stating how "low" the pops where!

Start a NEW program..... who ever gets the first one graded.... will have a top pop coin! (Atleast for a week or two)

Now I like Rick, but sometimes he ads are a little over the top!

    Si vis pacem, para bellum

In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
  • Well doesn`t a catchy phrase make you feel better about buying expensive coins. Everyone has his own idea about marketing. I think it is up to you to decide if the coin is irreplaceable or whatever other adjective is used to describe it when considering buying it. I find alot of the hype interesting and amusing. I buy coins from Rick and will continue to do so based on the coin not the hype. Russ does have a point. It could be difficult for someone new to see through the add and just consider the coin. That is why I think the best advice is do your homework. Join a forum, club, and if money is burning a hole in your pocket, buy books, books, books.

    Lucy;

I tried to get them to you but the USPS truck would not hold them all! Just kidding, I do have frankies that actually have hair instead of that slick backed look this fella has.

If you have a 1958 business strike with hair, well, let me suggest you leave the Dremel tools alone. image I'm sorta' joking, but I hope you are aware that comparing Franklins should be done by comparing the same years, or least those with similar strike characteristics. Two years ca make quite a difference in this series. It would be grossly unfair to compare a '58 to a '59.

The reason being the master die quality suffered till it was remade in the 60s. One will notice certian strike characteristics go down as the 50s progressed. A close look at a 48 and Frankie has alot of hair lines as opposed to the smoother look in the mid to late 50s...

for me wirth everty dealer you have to see the coins you are buying and sometimes you agree and sometimes you do not on the eye appeal and grade
but i know with r and i coins they do get in some really monster exceptional eye appealling coins with everything else be picky and pick and choose wisely as for me i have thearned that only the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is the thing to buy the best in your own opiniom whateve that drfination is for you

exceptional eye appeal reasonable value and how do you determine that?/. well that is a good question i have not figured out yet but it all boils down to what you like and also never ever buy coins with money you cant afford to lose
coins are fun and a game not an investment

    sincerely michael
