Scary thought, but would anyone pay to keep this forum going?

One day it may happen, hope not, but where would we be without it? Am I the only one looking for something to do

as a person that runs a large website it's hard for me to see why Cu would start charging, when it comes to server space, 100 megs of simple text and small kb size photos would take forever to fill, and by then, the web master could delete th e old stuff if they chose to. With thta said, Lucy would pay to keep this going, Lucy would even host this forum on my own server if I had to.

Well, having been doing online stuff since 1989, I can comfortably say that there is always another forum on the horizon waiting for an opportunity. This board has been a wonderful learning environment for me. And a wonderful encouragement to spend more than I ever imagined on coins prior to a lottery.
  • Holy cow!
I was under the impression if we were here long enough they'd give us some kinda prize or something.

    Us pay? No way. Ray

A perhaps equally interesting question is how much are you willing to pay?

We already pay for this forum. It just isn't a direct payment, it's hidden in the business we do with CU's subsidiaries.

That is interesting, it would have to be within reason, so then the question becomes, what is within reason? I don't know, If it became too expensive I would offer to host this from my Rockin' Radio server, I would of course register a coin related domain name....Hmmmmm...What if Lucy ran the show? Would it cost each member a Franklin? Hmmmmm.....

  • I'd pay $50 a month if it were the only joint in town.

Yes, I'd pay 25 bucks a years. Where else could you get educational and cheap entertainment all in one place. What we should do is try to recruit the resident experts into weekly Q & As on different coin series. I'll be glad to impart my knowledge of Sac Dollars-there purty when they are new. There, who's next? mdwoods

    Ogden,

It's a good question, but who would we pay. I am grateful PCGS choose to create this environment, and more grateful that it is only lightly moderated, but best I can tell, all of the content except the Q & A comes from the collectors/dealers who post here. The board has a real personality, and I always enjoy reading the posts, and feel like I have known some of the posters here for years, but PCGS is not the content provider. It is the numismatic community that we all are attached to. It's kind of like a big fraternity. That has real value. I'm sure this forum is one of the things that draws attention and submissions to PCGS. Even PCGS detractors come here and read the threads and post. Now what's that worth in terms of PR? What always fascinates me is that any collector with a legitimate question always gets not only an answer, but usually a complete debate of all sides of the issue, and advice from experienced peers. I think that bests answers from the company. What more could PCGS want, the most active board around, and minimal company involvement. image

Braddick - I agree with you, the guys and gals of the Forum are worth a reasonable price

and I would pay it. Sometimes this Forum is more real then the newspapers and coin investment

    newsletters. Bear

Closed (or paid for) discussion groups die a quick and painful death.

Chatting on the internet has been free for so long it can't go backwards. The cat's out of the bag so to speak.
