Does this 1909 S VDB look polished?

Does this not appear to be almost proof like? Could it be polished?

I am curious, is this a Teletrade photo? If so, then very probably not whizzed (or else in ANACS net 55 MS details slab).

I agree that something looks up from 2:30 to 3:30 on obverse and from 5 to 7 on reverse, but I have some coins that are very good but the slab is dirty/ has been scratched and it looks like that.

My questions for the quick whizzed answers are
1- what type of whizzing do you suspect?
2- on a photo, how can you tell if on the coin or the plastic slab cover?
3 - what areas on the coin gave you the whizzed diagnosis?
  • The jaw line and the coat both look like they have parallel lines, not to mention the softness of the lettering
in contrast to the rest of the strike. I'd say it was whizzed with a polishing brush on a Dremel.

Also, if the coin was really that nice, the seller would be bragging about it in a nice holder (like PCGS or NGC)
and would be getting a lot more for the coin.

Badly whizzed, for the longest time I kept a whizzed 32-D quarter just to remind me what that look was. Alas I sold it (anacs net graded) and ended up with a whizzed bust half that I promptly returned. They have a look to them that is unnatural due to the way they reflect light. This one appears to have grooves in it where the device went in deeply.
  • Would anyone venture a guess as to the grade before it was whizzed?

Since luster is a big part of a grade and this no longer has any,the only thing you could say is MS.

I'd say AU-55- looks a little flat on his forehead... real shame... even if that were brown and not whizzed, it would be a $$$$$$$$$$$ coin!

..........read what the seller says.......what you see is what you get...sounds to me he knows its been messed with, and wants to take the easy way out...............{pass on it}.....
  • Look at the sellers other auctions. Seems all of these coins look the same. The seller snail mail address is also apparently not working. Seems strange.

The Seller does not subscribe to any rules or regulations regaurding the evaluation or grading of Rare Coins. They only ARE what they are, Genuine Numismatics as Issued by the U.S. Mint at the Time and Place noted on the Pictured Coin. No other gaurentees of Value, Collectability, or Grade are either Implied, Stated, or Inferred. YOU make the determanation by Selecting to Participate.

  • This guy took what weere probably nice coins and has trashed them all. He is trying to get some new collector to buy them thinking they are choice BU coins. I have half a mind to bid on them, and complain to ebay that after I paid he never sent the coins.

  • This seller's coins want to make me hurl! What a shame....
