MY SHOW REPORT: Daytona Beach...Saturday

I attempted to get any responses from board members that may be going to this show, and only got a couple....so I'll report (in my own opinion).

I arrived around 11 am, and saw that only 2/3 of the tables were attended by dealers. I saw only a few signs behind the tables as to identify "WHO" they were. I then traveled around the tightly knitted bourse (rows of tables and tiny little aisles to pass by dealers tables, continuously bumping into people and having to excuse myself.)

As I only had a few things on my shopping list, I was just browsing to see what would catch my eye, or jump out at me. I priced '02 silver proof sets and saw prices of $40 and $38.95 and and finally picked out 2 from the guy selling them for $35. I got 2 very nice sets and feel that was WAY better than taking my chances with the mint on substandard product.

I then saw a dealer that had bullion coins and bars. I have seen them advertised nationally for $57-$62 for the Johnson-Matthey 10 oz silver bars, so I asked the price and he said $48. I bought one immediately. I didn't have one of those yet and considered that a good price. A couple of tables down a "foreign coins" dealer had 2 of the 1/2 pound proof SAE replicas that one said "1/2 troy pound" and the other just said 1/2 pound. I asked the dealer for the certificates of authenticity so I could find out the difference of whether we were dealing with 8 ounces of a pound weight or 6 ounces of the troy pound...he didn't know there was a difference, but did say that the 1/2 pounder that may be 8 oz. may need to be priced higher. I then left the table in disgust. That would have made a big difference, and they were overpriced anyway, as I saw 1 pound ones for $89......and his 1/2 pounder was priced $55, which would have (in my opinion) been priced more than $10 too much. (and his lack of knowledge didn't impress me much either!)

Next table I visited had 1990 Australian Kookaburra (.999 silver) coins for $6.50 (in the mint capsule). I bought 2.

My next quest was to buy a couple '92 silver proof sets. In my opinion, these are priced way low and are beautifully done from the mint as the frosted cameos and mirror fields and devices are very nice. The dealer had them at "bid" and sold me his last one for $11.25 . I needed another one and found one from another dealer for $12.75, and still deemed that a good price and bought that one as well.

All in all, this was a "fair" show and good values found by me made it good for what I bought. The next time they should hold it in a larger venue. Pretty happy with my purchases!

    Thanks for the report.

Have you been to this show before? If so, did you think it was more or less well attended than in the past?

Did it look like a lot of business being done, or a lot of looking and not much buying?

I arrived at the show at about noon on Saturday. (I might have walked right past you shortdj image) Sorry I didn't know exactly when I was going to attend, I would have enjoyed meeting you.

As far as the layout, it looks like they anticipated more dealers and had too much table space which cut down on aisle space. Many of the dealers I have seen at other shows such as Orlando, Melbourne and Titusville.

It was not very well attended while I was there. I saw a little buying and a little selling. There was not enough material for sale at this show in my opinion. I still enjoyed going, but I purchased far less at this show than many previous ones that I have attended. I purchase at least $200. and usually $300 or more but at this show I purchased exactly $53.35.

I did pick up two very nice 1931-S buffalo nickels for my collections (one in F+ for $6. and one in VF/EF (full horn) for $10.) The rest were various low rent Mercury Dimes and Washington Quarters which I will sell on eBay. Til the next show. image

That was a super buy on the bullion bar of 10 ounces. I would have tried to buy a couple, too.
  • DaveG: You're welcome for the report. I had never been to the show before, and don't really know if I'll attend it again unless they change venues....I just wasn't that impressed with that place at all, it was old and small. And as far as business being traded, it looked like there was a lot of dealer to dealer stuff going on.

merz2: Yes it was a good time, since I haven't been to a show lately, and a good way to spend the better part of a Saturday.

UncleJoe: Sorry I missed you. I think I spent my wad (or what I thought I needed to spend) in very short order. I agree with your report as well.

Rampage: Yes, I wish I would have bought the other one he had as well. It was the Sunshine minting company with the silver eagle on one side....I just like going with the JM bar instead. Only thing I didn't like was paying 6% sales tax on bullion!!!!!

All in all, still happy with my visit to the show and purchases!
