Bitten by the TBT bug - My first "true" rainbow Morgan

Well - here she is - didn't mean to buy anything this morning - but the look was right and the price was right. In addition to the rainbow obverse - it has a nifty die break on the reverse connecting United States - whatcha think?

I hit a couple of the "toned" dealer web sites over the weekend, and was sorely tempted by quite a few, except, I just couldn't find a coin with a date that may have more to it than just color. I am by no means belittling "toned" coins, I just look and desire more than a standard issue coin, meaning, some variety potential.

Question to the "afficianados." Do you buy "toned" coins based solely on the look, or does series and grade to a lesser extent all that matters? Before you answer, I ask because, while reviewing the various "toned" inventories, I noticed quite a few that only displayed the toned side. One site didn't even have the coins identified or categorized, and I had to enlarge each and every image just for a description and the date of issue. I mean, in my case, I don't want to buy a coin just because: I really prefer to acquire specific coins, and if they are nicely toned, all the better. But, the way some of the sites were laid out, I got the impression that some people buy just for the color alone, regardless of the series, date and condition.

As I've been acquiring Morgans, I've set aside the idea of getting particular dates and mints and focused my attention more on getting "interesting" coins. Certainly if I can find a good date/mint combination I'll go for it, but given the fact that the series is so complex, I decided to go for some things that just looked "neat". This particular coin fits in because I don't have a true rainbow toned coin like this one, but I've also picked up a few DMPL's and a few other odds and ends that are interesting, like overdates and repunched mint marks. I guess I've gone the route of collecting a complete set with my Franklins and am working on my Kennedy's but the Morgans I'm just going for look and varieties. As for grades, I am trying to stay at least in MS63 or above because the 60-62's seem to have too much chatter that distracts from the look of the coins.

Great coin. Wait 'till you receive it! As good as TBT's PHOTOS are (and they ARE good!) the coins end up being better in person.
Congratulations on scoring a neat coin.

She's a cutie pie if it wasn't for the date i would almost say it looked like a hot lips variety. Look at those lips. I don't have the book in front of me but i think the hot lips variety was only in 1888-O double die OBV never the less still a beautiful girl you got there
