The Little thing that Counts with Mercs.

But a $1700.00 difference for a little stronger split in the Middle Band ?? Hmmm....Pretty spendy for Metal Movement on such a small item. image

This one Got the FB designation.

I must admit I do like Mercs. But if I were to collect them, I'd look for the best I could find without the FB designation (like example #2) and pass on paying the huge premium for coins like example #1. Same with SLQ's!

Seems to me that the bottom 24s on a good day is worthy of the Split Band designation..........

  • #1 seems to have a much better strike, but I'll leave the $1700.00 difference to the Merc. collectors. image

I have one or two like that. I just can't understand, why on some days I get FB on dimes and on other days I can't??

Just one more small point, NGC does the same thing! One of the dimes I have comming back was a break out of an NGC holder No bands and now in is a holder with FBimage

Will anyone hazard a guess if it's the weakness in the lower center band
or the problems with the strike that kept the second from going FB? Or is
it mostly luck of the draw?

Actually the number two Dime IMO should not get the FB designation. The point that was trying to be made was why the collector base is willing to pay the extra $1700 for the number one Dime when there is virtually No Difference in the two examples except that little band area. Full Bands has been Hyped so much that pricing has really got completely out of hand for the examples that do get the designation.

The sad part of the whole scheme is that the number two Dime gets relegated to the Junk status by some collectors when really it is just as nice or better than the number one Dime. Well maybe not junk as it is a $400 to $500 dollar coin, but when compared to the $2000 to $2300 dollar price number one commands some would call it junk.

Heck maybe I have this wrong and the number two Dime should be priced higher by the Collector base.

As always just a Opinion about these babies.

PS: Yes I do have some Dimes that have got FB with a Weaker split than number two. Also they Do Not have a Huge jump in price either. Hmmm......Whats Up with that ??

I think they do price grade. But IMHO it should be easy to tell FB or not. There is either an unbroken line, thus a split, or NOT!! Black and White to me. That scrape on the top coin turns me off and the bottom coin looks nicer and is a bargin because of the no bands.
