Hi Everyone,
WoW !!! Oh my God. What sets! What Cards! What Lots!!! Another Mastro Net auction for me to go broke on. So much for the wife's mink coat for Christmas. She gets an imitation. What do you think that 52 Topps set is going for? Book is $267,340.00. I am figuring around $350K (including the 15%). So much for a recession. What do you think this set is going to sell for???

Mike

Mike, I have no idea what that set will go for in the end. I just know I won't be involved in the bidding.
I have never paticipated in a Mastro auction and am curious of one thing. I went to their website to register and am I reading the instructions right about having to pay to bid on their auction? It has tiers of signing up for the auction. Do I have to pay $50 just to bid?
Ed
P.S. I really enjoy those 54 Red Hearts I got from you.
I would be absolutely floored if it went for $350,000. I will say $275,000 including the 15% commission.
Still looking for someone to come in on half the set. Myself and one other collector are good for 205 cards. Anyone want to start a set by being able to buy half at less than smr?

I might be able to take some of the commons depending on how the wilson's unfold and if the easy ones would be discounted below the tough ones you will want.
I will PE you but I'm not going to make a very big dent.
great stuff from one of the lots:
"That the baseball writers of New York and their guests here assembled vote to the Stevens Brothers this mark of their Love and Devotion, at the same time making obeisance to that oblong of succulence, the Hot Dog, which for a half century has been the Backbone of the National Pastime."

I digress, though. I am always amazed at the high quality of product that they are able to bring to the table -- so many things that I never even knew existed or that I wanted ;-)
After a first read, one of my favorite lots is the E94 Ty Cobb with Opie Dildock's reverse advertising overprint. The E94's are probably the coolest set with the back overprints. That card will go for many times the opening bid, if I had to speculate.

I agree with you on this.

Thanks for the compliment Ed and yes Jay, Saturday. I was as shocked as you were. I think it is a great test for a complete set like this. Granted, there have been many high end sets sold on Ebay and auction houses, but nothing of this magnitude. I think it will be a good test for the graded card market as well as the economy. Ed, you have to pay for the catalog. The catalog costs money, shipping costs money, etc. The fee is a one time unless you do not buy anything. I am going to check the set out early next week. I want to see it live.

Really have to wonder on the set - it's great advertising/publicity, and will undoubtably be the highest price ever paid for a postwar set, probably the highest price ever paid for a set sold complete (I'm sure the Harris collection probably totalled more for his T206 collection).
"The famous Kirk Harris collection has finally been auctioned and the prices are in. As the first sportscard set to be pedigreed by PSA, this set broke new ground in the marketplace. With many of the prices breaking prior price records, this auction was an enormous success. Featured below is a full recap of the two-day sale with the entire list of prices realized.
Legendary PSA Graded Harris T206 set lives up to advance billing by netting over 1.1 million dollars"
That does not include the cards from his collection that were sold privately separate from the sale.
Now -- if you want to talk about comparisons -- I wonder how the T-206 Harris collection, broken up, compares to Charlie's 1952 Topps set, broken up.

MS and anyone else...
Do you have any other info regarding this set and the collector behind it. I do not know too much about the collector who built the set.
Also.....does anyone have any of these Harris cards in their personal collection?
Thanks,
John
I never knew Kirk Harris -- but am proud to have at least one of his cards in my collection -- yes, a Philadelphia Phillies card nonetheless ;-)
Current bid on the 1952 Topps set, with premium, is $263,591.50
Next bid is: $276,771.65, with premium -- that is your estimate essentially.
With high dollar items like this -- winning in a Mastro auction is all about bid placement. It does not appear as if there are too many places left within the relevant range. Good luck on all who participate! I was high bidder for about a 1/2 hour ;-)
If you bid in the 200 thousand range, could you please adopt me? I can't afford to pay attention.
however plenty of buyer's will be burnt.
