Coin Price fun from 1946

I won an old Wayte Raymond "Standard Catalogue of United States Coins" on eBay. my thought was to see what some if the prices were for some key dates and to get an idea as to whether or not the passage of 50 years had turned up any new keys. one thing that struck me right off the bat was peace dollars in uncirculated condition. the majority are listed between $2 and $4, but low and behold the key to the series is the 1923 at $10!!!!!image

also in uncirculated condition the key morgan is the 1903-O which is listed for the princely sum of $75. this of course was before most of the GSA releases.

if anyone has a date they'd like me to look up just post or PM. grades are generally V---VF F---XF for some of the older stuff and most series includes UNC---PROOF pricing.

and not to start another round of anything, but i thought it was humorous to consider the performance thus far of some of the then moderns which are of course todays classics!!!!

I started a thread earlier. I just picked up a Fell's 1949 coin guide from an antique shop. Interesting read--I am sure yours is too.

Sounds really cool! I'm kinda curious what he'd have prices for some of the all time classics:

    1893S Morgan
    1909S VDB
    1922 No D
    1937D 3 Legged Buffalo
    1907 $20 St. Gaudens

I bet it's fun to see the prices. Does the book contain other info besides prices?

    hey nwcs

there is a brief description of each series in much the same fashion as the redbook. an interesting addition at the end of the book are notes on each denomination listing some varieties and references used. also, a brief outline of mint reports from 1793-1935.

    1893S Morgan---------------------unc. $50
    1909S VDB--------------------------unc. $12.50
    1922 No D--------------------------no variety listed
    1937D 3 Legged Buffalo---------no variety listed
    1907 $20 St. Gaudens-----------high relief, said to have been only 16 struck------$1500
    ---------------------------------------roman------unc. $125
    ---------------------------------------arabic, no motto-----unc. $75

Man, there are days I would go back in time and shell out 50 cull morgans for 1 unc. 1893S to bring to today! image I'm surprised the 3 legged buffalo wasn't listed. I would have thought it would be common knowledge. Did the author remark on the 1943 copper cent or the 1944 steel?
  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
..........nothing said about the steel/copper cents and errors. but of course you could have gotten a Chain Ameri. in fine for $85.

i'm beginning to understand how Eliasberg assembled such a fine collection back then. if someone is good with numbers, do an inflation calculation for some of these prices and let us know what you come up with.

There's a pretty good inflation calculator here:

    http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

According to that, your $85 Chain would cost $805 today. Now of course the Collector's Universe price guide says they go for $7800. This corresponds to a rate of return of about 8.4%, which ain't so bad.

Now tell us the price for 1904-O Morgans...

    hey bob

Now tell us the price for 1904-O Morgans... surprisingly an unc. was only $10. what's amazing is that most of the morgan proofs could be bought for $7-$10.
