PIP FOR HOWARD?
A report surfaced from New York suggesting that the Nuggets and Blazers were in talks regarding a possible swap sending Scottie Pippen to Denver in exchange for Juwan Howard. A Nuggets source close to the situation said the Blazers were the ones interested in Juwan and given his 13.8 point per game scoring average to go with his 8.3 rebounds per game rebounding average. While Juwan has never lived up to his contract, the Nuggets are not unhappy with Juwan at all, in fact they are quite happy with him (and the $20 million he’d clear next summer). The Rumor as printed suggested the Blazers wanted to clear more time for Bonzi Wells and Ruben Patterson, and the Nuggets wanted to clear time for Nene Hilario. The Nuggets say Nene is getting plenty of minutes and at which time they feel he should start he will, even if that means moving Juwan to the bench. Nene is getting about 23 minutes a game as a reserve and pulling down nice numbers in limited use (8 points and 6 boards a game on average). A Blazers source admitted that if the tide doesn’t turn soon in Portland, paying luxury tax on a lottery team with its hands tied is not something ownership is fond of, but was quick to point out that Bob Whitsitt’s job was not in jeopardy and that Paul Allen is still letting Bob run the team. If The Big Guy steps in, it would be at seasons end. The recent Damon Stoudamire-Rasheed Wallace, arrest for Marijuana has not set well with anyone inside the team, and talk again is surfacing that Damon is not only a bad fit in PDX, but now is being labeled a bad influence, although you could urge that Rasheed isn’t a model citizen and this may just be “bad and bad”- meaning both should go. The Blazers deny that either player is now available because of the incident, but don’t be surprised as the Blazers struggles continue to hear rumors, especially from New York about a Damon/Wallace trade package.
TIME FOR A CHANGE: Marcus Fizer has tried to play the role asked of him, but as the Bulls continue to struggle and the coaching staff seems more interested in unproven than proven, players like Marcus Fizer are growing uncomfortable. In the Bulls lockeroom your seeing more and more agents trying to calm unhappy players, and Aaron Goodwin who represents Jamal Crawford is joining, Henry Thomas in asking around regarding his client. Thomas represents Fizer, while Goodwin reps for Crawford. Both players want out, and both say a change is really the only answer. Fizer is hoping rumors of a deal to New York are true, as the Knicks are rumored to have dangled their $4.5 million medical exception Chicago’s way, but Bulls GM Jerry Krause has put an unprotected first rounder as the price tag on all of his unhappy players, meaning if you want Jamal Crawford or Marcus Fizer, you’d have to pony up a replacement player and an unprotected first. Eddy Curry has entered the disgruntled phase of his career, getting just 17 minutes a game in his 2nd year, one he worked hard in the off-season to prepare for. Both he and Tyson Chandler seem to be sitting in the 4th quarter as of late and neither like that, and while Chandler seems to be taking it a bit better (not much) than Curry, who is seriously unhappy and there is talk of him pushing the issue (play me or trade me). With Jalen Rose calling for front court changes, and several unhappy players it may come down to trades to solve what’s wrong in Chicago. Fizer, Crawford, Eddie Robinson and now Eddy Curry believe its time for a change.
MITCH ISN’T TOSSING THE TOWEL: Laker’s GM Mitch Kupchak was asked this week about league wide rumors that he may be shopping for change, Mitch countered that by saying "The temptation is to overanalyze when you shouldn't. For us to get a feel for how good this team could be, we have to get these guys back together. There's no reason this team can't be good enough." While Mitch is trying to keep his “game face” about the Lakers, talk continues that several members of the champs could be available, but that Mitch staying true to his nature is being coy about who and what is available off the Lakers roster. A League source continues to bring up the league wide value of clutch shooter Robert Horry, but a source close to Shaq says he’d move to block any trade that moved Horry or Derek Fisher. With Shaq back on the floor, time will tell if a change is needed, but for now the Lakers seem content in their roster.
