  • It looks like the obverse 2 of 1828. Paired with different reverses the coin could be Newcomb numbers 2,3,4,5 or 12. None of the 5 possible varieties is particularly rare.

I don't see any mention of MPD's for 1828 in Newcombs book - are you sure it's a common MPD variety??

  • The Newcomb reference is 60 years old and lacks photographic references. I don't even own a copy. Both the Wright and Noyes references are current and offer abundant photographic aid. Trying to Use Newcomb for middle date cents is like trying to use Miller for attributing Connecticut coppers.

Good to know - thanks. As you can tell, large cents aren't my specialty!

    Mike,
I think I got you addicted. Can't help on this one since I do not have a good copper book for RPD and Breen isn't enough help. Doug Bird ( Dealer and expert on early American Coppers) could help you. I don't have his website or E-mail easily at hand but his telephone is 310-489-1425 ( Los Angeles). He could tell you right away if he could see the scan.

  • There is no known 1828 with mispunched numerals.
Also, the disturbance you think to be the top of a number, doesn't fit the radii of either the 2 or the 8.
My guess is that it is damage.

    Mike,
Lathmach may be right as the mirage in the denticles is not the size of the large date and probably not the small date. However sometimes the wrong coin punch was used. I suppose outside chance is the Half Cent punch. Keep looking and asking.

  • Mike - I think the best thing would be to send the coin to ANACS with a note and see if they can identify it for sure.

    PS - that's not damage - that's a digit IMHO

Thanks guy's, I was thinking the eight from the small date would be very close. Frank will ANACS identify and label an unknown variety? Mike image
  • We'll keep our fingers crossed for you, Mike. I'd be super to find a new large cent variety.
