Picked this up in the Santa Clara Auction on 11-22-02 Morgan proof

this should start my Morgan proof collection. I might send it off for conservation to make her white.

If possible, I would like to see a pic before you make her white.image

Nice start.image Since you are thinking of conservation to make it white could you please tell us what type of toning it currently has?

Keep going on those Proof Morgans! It is a tough set, but worthwile. Of course I have a hidden agenda, given that you just passed me in the Merc set.

Seriously, nice to have you moving up in the Mercs.

Unless the toning on a proof Morgan is very light and also very unattractive, dipping is usually not a good idea. It many times will give the coin a washed out steel grey appearance, it many times also reveals hairlines that were not previously visible under the toning and can also damage the delicate fields and take away from the reflectivity, etc. Many dipped proofs also tend to retone in an unattractive and unnatural splotchy pattern. For the few proof Morgans that were 'improved' via a dip, many more were probably worse off afterwards IMO, so be careful.

  • Sure looks nice, I would keep it the way it is.
  • i should have said that if I do conserve it I will send it to NCS, I WILL NOT DO IT MYSELF.

  • Nice proof morgan, your next acquisition should be 1895 proof....image
Found a circulated 1903 0 Morgan to complete my Morgan dollar collection!!
  • Looks like it's already been dipped and has retoned in this "dusky gold patina" as they described it. Conserve it a few more times and there won't be any coin left to conserve. No offense but why did you buy the coin if you aren't happy with the way it looks?
  • the 1895 will come in time...........

i do like the tone however I might change my mind. I have seen coins come back from NCS and they look great.

btw the reason I bought it because I like proof morgans.
