Does anybody know a good scanner for slabbed coins?

My scanner works good for raw coins, but on slabs it doesn't focus on the coin and they come out blurry.

Anybody know of a good (but cheap) scanner that produces high quality slab pictures?

HP makes numerous scanners that do well on coins in slabs. On proofs you need to prop one end up or you get a weird reflection, but otherwise no problems. The bigger question is "Are scanners or digi cameras better for coins" I honestly believe if you have the right digital camera, you will get better images, but for quick and dirty coin images, the scanner can't be beat (self contained light source, image goes right to the computer - can't be beat).

    just my humble 2 cents
  • When I was looking for scanners I tried several and ended up with a HP. The thin ones wouldn't focus on slabs correctly, I think the focal length of their lenses is too short...

I have the same scanner that Carl does. The HP 4400. It does a pretty good job with slabbed coins and is very easy to use. Here's one done with it:

I now shoot the majority of my coins with a digital camera, but it's nice to have the scanner around for quick shots.
