If you were to design a new Commemoritive, What would it be?

I think this, are something similar, this was asked a few months ago. But anyway, I would design one with Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse and Old Faithful on the reverse. Or Clara Barton on the Obverse and the Red Cross on the Reverse with a similar design to the reverse of a Peace Dollar.

The W.C. Fields and Mae West Commemorative Two-Bit silver coin. Rather than having "Quarter Dollar" it would have "Two Bits" on the reverse with a wild turkey rather than an eagle.

The obverse would have W.C. Fields and Mae West facing each other.

The coins motto would be "Never Give a Sucker and Even Break" around the top of the reverse and "Or Smarten Up a Chump" around the bottom of the reverse.
  • I had to repost, how about Austin Powers and Dr Evil. Or Deter and Waynes World?

Well, although I like the past, I would like a new commem to be more futuristic, sooooo .....
Obverse - World View (like Columbian Commem reverse) with '60's Peace Symbol (ok a little of the past thrown in image) in foreground to symbolize a hopeful new era in world peace.

Reverse - International Space Station with space shuttle docked, Soyuz arriving, and Earth in the background.
  • For fun: Beautiful five coin set of Charlie's Angels (from the series, not the movie), maybe bump it up to a 24 coin set and include some James Bond girls. Might have to colorize these beauts, at least Farrah's and Cheryl Ladd's would have gold for hair.

For real: How about a 2004 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase kinda showing a then and now combo coin with the St. Louis Gateway Arch on the right side of the reverse and maybe some kind of Indian portrait/scene on the left half reverse. On the obverse of the coin how about an Eagle gliding over a map of the land purchased from that event?

Or the reverse could show the Arch around the rim and then have various events from the past 200 years shown inside. It would be a busy design kind of like the Texas commem from the 1930s.

This probly won't get many votes but what about a commemorating Custer's defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn?

  • It would be fun to see WC Fields or Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin on a commemorative. Yeah, Chaplin was born in England but LaFayette was foreign born, too. Music greats like Billie Holliday or Louis Armstrong might be nice. To be more serious Edison and Carver or Crazy Horse and Custer could make a nice commemorative.

I would design one with Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse

I like your obverse design ccr. The reverse would like good with a Western Red Cedar tree on it. I am pretty sure that was one of Teddys favorite trees. Mine too!!! mdwoods

  • I would design a Goodnight/Loving Trail commerative coin. On the obverse would be Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones on horseback. The reverse would show a herd of cattle crossing a small river with a sunset in the background.
    Go well.

    Some ideas for commemoratives:

    1. America's Space Program
    2. Pioneers in modern aviation (yeager, carpenter, etc)
    3. Great influencers in American history (John Smith, Jonathan Edwards, Miles Standish, etc)
    4. America's Technology: Computer, Internet, etc.
    5. For 2014, the 200th anniv. of the battle of New Orleans
    6. Transportation: Railroad, Car, Ship
  • I would make the obverse a view of an eyeball through a fisheye lens, and the words would be "What CHU lookin' at!?" The other side would show a hoard of coins.

T.R. was my thought, too- he's overdue for a coin, he is remembered as a strong president, and we're about at the centenary of his administration. While Old Faithful as a reverse is interesting, I'm not so sure how I would like that. Might be all right. I guess I hadn't really thought about a reverse.

The Old Faithful tie in for Teddy is he started the National Parks. Isn't Old Faithful already on the Yellowstone?

How about Al Gore with a quote,"I Invented the Internet." Just Kidding, just kidding!!

The Buffalo Smithsonian went so well what about one with the Indian Head Cent. I know a lot of people don't like the redos but that coin sure is popular.
  • John Adams needs to be on a coin. He was such a major influence in the formation of this country, he deserves a bill or coin. BTW, take Jackson of the $20 bill. The guy was a disgrace.

How about an obverse with a scene similar to the "ides of march", figures swathed in full PCGS gold and silver memberships assaulting a central figure with PCGS emblazoned upon his chest, and for the reverse, a drive in movie setting with a parking lot full or Chrysler/Plymouth "Prowlers" with the occupants facing and cheering at the movie screen, which has scrolled, Presented by NGC, with its appropriate logo. image

I'm sorry. The image had me rolling and I just couldn't resist sharing it. You have to admit, it's timely, and funny IMO.

Please don't be offended. I know most of you have a sense of humor.

Clackamas- You are so right about Jackson. He really was a disgrace.
  • If not for Jackson we might all be collecting
british coins now, he had the political savvy to enlist pirates to fight the british and win. But he won the battle. Can we say as much for Franklin? Or Kennedy? And how about the tragic civil war lost when Lincoln was president? whoops, some of you are probably yankees. Jackson was a swaggering hard drinking, hard fighting, womanizer; that's good enough for me!

I agree, ditch Jackson and put a real Hepcat like Bill Haley, why, Lucy would never again spend a twenty!

  • I am a little late in replying to the thread but I hope somebody reads this. It was a great original question and really had me thinking what would be appropriate. Heres what I came up with:

It would be a three piece set for the Victims and Heroes of September 11, 2001

First piece, a fifty dollar face value gold coin, about the size of a gold american eagle. The obverse
with the WTC as it was with the date arced above it. The reverse showing the famous shot of the
FDNY guys hoisting the flag at ground zero. Definitely making space for In God We Trust on this coin.

The second piece, a ninety percent silver Dollar, about the size, weight of a ASE, an image of the Pentagon
on the Observe. Again the date arced over the top from say nine to three or so. The reverse with the
image of that huge flag they drapped over the side of the building, near the crash site and hole. Include
symbols for all the branches of the armed services perhaps.

The third piece, a ninety percent silver half, little bigger than the Kennedy. The observe showing the plane
that was crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside, maybe having it tipped to an obvious descending angle.
The date again arced from nine to three or so. The reverse showing a stack of three hands, like players
will stack their hands together in a basketball game time out to show their unity as they go back out.
Hands of men and women showing their resolve to sacrifice so much so that others would be safe. And
include that phrase we heard them say when they knew it was time to give their lives. "Let's Roll"

I know this isn't as cheerful or playful as some of the other posts, which were wonderful. The original
question just made me really think who deserves the honor of being placed forever on a coin of the
United States of America. If not these people, I can't imagine who.

    Thanks for reading.

    Kris.
