Why do you want to CrossOver your coins?

When you send PCGS a submission with NGC (or, any Company really) coins for Crossovers, what is your motivation? I'm curious why members here want their coins out of one Service's holder and into anothers and are willing to risk the expense of doing so- usually with poor results (per the latest threads).

So they all look the same and can be stored in the same box.
I personally like pcgs slabs best. If I liked anacs best I would cross them all to anacs.

  • I have a super duper ANACS coin that was graded accurately. I paid $500 in an ANACS slab and it would be $750 in a PCGS slab. The story is made up but I think that's everybody's motivation.

I try to cross my early material to NGC because I want the variety attribution. (I collect mostly the rare varieties.)

I am with Placid, I like the looks of their holder, and it gives the collection a common look. After getting my first NCS coin, I may be changing that. I am trying to decide if I should forgo the grade on a bunch of my varieties, and just send them to NCS (PCGS won't designate them, so they won't get the business even though they would be my first choice)

Other than an obvious price jump or a potential buyer wants the coin in one type of slab, I like the look of some coins in certain slabs. Toned coins just look so much better blasting off the white NGC insert. I sent them some PCGS coins earlier this week because of that.

Because of the fact that a lot of other collectors seem to prefer a certain type of slab it makes sense that it might be easier to sell a coin in one slab as opposed to another. A piece of junk is a piece of junk regardless of slab. There is also the question of esthetics of the slab itself as well as other personal preferences and of course $$$$ differences.

Well out of the some 3000 Morgan dollars that i own as well as a few various other coins i only have approx 40 slabbed coins. Out of those that are slabbed 3 or 4 are pcgs and the balance are i believe NGC. I don't see a need to cross any.
Now if i were asked who would i send my raw Morgans to for grading? Well after reading the forems for severals weeks now my answer would be with out a doubt None of them at this time.

    Just my Humble OPinion.

(Post I made of the Registry Forum)

PCGS notes the "common name" type on the holder. (Example: "Large Date" & "Small Date" & "Small Stars" & "No Stems"...ect (Red Book Titles) NGC puts "N-2" & "S239" on the holder.... which is good.... but I like the "common names" first, then if the coin has no "common name" then numbers are great. (PCGS doesn't note the type designation numbers! )

Coins with common names go to PCGS!
Coins without common names to go NGC for the Type Number Designation.

I agree with Greg..... Red Copper looks better in NGC holders..... now RB and BN copper looks better in PCGS holders. The white insert on the NGC slabs make RB and BN copper look darker than it is. IMHO
