Purchased on ebay carter numismatics for a type set with toning in mind
  • I agree with Russ cleaned re-toned, but even so still a very nice coin.

hi, and welcome to the forum, the coin looks to be about an au50, cleaned and now has retoned, still it looks pretty.

What is the round mark next to the left arm?
  • The toning is from being in an album.

The coin is slabbed by NGC as AU55
the spot next to the arm appears to be a foreign material inside of slab possible glue ?
it is visible with loupe and appears to be round and raised.
I think it was a little over graded 50-53 would have been more accurate to me
I bought the coin for a date sate and for the toning .

    cleaned and retoned...

toyo...i would say "has been cleaned" because of the "splotchiness"...

about the best way i can define "splotchiness" is:as you look at different areas of the coin you will see differences in color,or tone,in adjacent areas where there probably should be no differences...on marmac's quarter in the relatively light-in-color but toned fields i see this "splotchiness"...the rims are dark...splotchy is hard,if not impossible,to see with dark tones of color...the appearance of the fields is my clue that this coin has been cleaned at one time and has since retoned...the surfaces of a coin, once cleaned, have varying susceptibilities from one area of the coin to another to the agents that cause toning, hence "splotchiness"...

really, this 1849 quarter is not a bad looking coin at all...better than cleaned "blast white"...image
